Yorktown, Virginia, has been recognized for its outstanding digital marketing efforts, winning the 2025 VIRGO Award in the category of Best Digital and/or Social Media Initiative for its successful Independence Day campaign. This prestigious award was announced during the Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations’ annual meeting and spring symposium, held in Harrisonburg in early April.
The award-winning campaign, titled Independence Day Celebration, was spearheaded by the York County Economic & Tourism Development (ETD) team on a modest budget. The campaign showcased a mix of preplanned and real-time content aimed at boosting engagement in the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July event and during the celebrations themselves.
Creative strategies played a pivotal role in the campaign’s approach, with the marketing team employing live streaming and interactive posts to keep the community engaged. Throughout the campaign, a total of 34 promotional posts were made, providing information about event deadlines, shopping guides, and behind-the-scenes looks at preparations.
On July 4, the day of the festivities, the team made an impressive 24 posts across social media platforms to facilitate engaging real-time storytelling, allowing followers to experience the event as it unfolded.
The success of the campaign was assessed through various metrics, including engagement levels, impressions, net engagement rates, audience growth, website traffic, and the extent of earned media coverage. These analytics demonstrated a notable increase in engagement and indicated a strong community interest in the Independence Day events.
The VIRGO Awards honor excellence in destination marketing across Virginia. A panel of judges, comprised of industry peers, evaluated submissions based on their overall quality, economic efficiency, and community impact. The campaigns considered for the awards were those completed between January and December 2024.
Planning for the Independence Day campaign commenced several months prior to the event, requiring the York County ETD team to brainstorm innovative strategies to stir community interest. The campaign officially launched in mid-April and concluded shortly after the festivities on July 5.
