Yorktown will celebrate National Farmers Market Week with its annual Market Days event scheduled for two Saturdays, August 2 and 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will take place at Riverwalk Landing, showcasing the invaluable contributions of local farmers to the community.
This year’s Market Days aligns with National Farmers Market Week, which emphasizes the critical role that farmers markets play in the food system by promoting sustainability, preserving farmland, and fostering healthy communities. Over 50 local vendors will set their stalls along the scenic York River, providing visitors with a plethora of fresh products.
The market will feature a variety of offerings including seasonal fruits and vegetables, pasture-raised meats, baked goods, honey, artisan bread, jams, sauces, flowers, herbs, and gourmet dog treats. Families are encouraged to participate in interactive activities such as the “Guess that Produce” game, where children can win free “I Love Farmers Markets” temporary tattoos and coloring sheets.
Special activities are planned for both days of the event. On August 2, the York/Poquoson Master Gardeners will host an engaging live activity centered on earthworms, while Yorktown Feed and Seed will lead a children’s craft session. These activities are designed to educate and entertain young visitors.
On August 9, attendees can enjoy a live performance by The Fifes and Drums of York Town at 10 a.m. Following the musical performance, Chef Anthony from Riverwalk Restaurant will demonstrate a unique recipe, Salt Cod and Shrimp Fritter with Green Garlic Sauce, at 11 a.m. The market will feature live music throughout the day from local talents, with Louis Vangieri performing on August 2 and Ritchie Beard on August 9.
The Yorktown Market Days are free to attend and will proceed rain or shine. For visitors’ convenience, ample free parking is available in designated public lots around Yorktown. A complimentary, wheelchair-accessible Yorktown Trolley will operate from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., making various stops along the market route.
In addition to promoting local agriculture, the market is committed to supporting all community members. It accepts SNAP benefits, allowing low-income families to partake in fresh produce and local goods at a discounted rate.
Looking ahead, themed markets are planned for the fall and holiday seasons. Details regarding future dates and special events will be available on the official Yorktown Market Days website.
With the 2023 Market Days, the community is poised to come together to honor local farmers, support sustainability, and enjoy a vibrant celebration of fresh food and family-friendly activities.
