Williamsburg, Virginia – William & Mary Law School has entered into a significant partnership with Lund University Faculty of Law in Sweden and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. This collaboration has culminated in a formalized memorandum of agreement, aimed at enhancing legal education, research, and innovation across the three institutions.

The announcement regarding this partnership was made publicly through a press release issued by David F. Morrill, the director of media relations and communications at William & Mary Law School. The memorandum was officially signed by key figures from each institution, including A. Benjamin Spencer, the Dean of William & Mary Law; Peggy Agouris, the Provost of William & Mary; Henrik Wenander, the Dean of Lund University Faculty of Law; and Peter Lundberg, the Executive Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute.

This agreement is designed to promote mutual cooperation in legal academia, enriching educational programs and fostering innovative research initiatives at both William & Mary and Lund University. Dean A. Benjamin Spencer emphasized the partnership with these highly respected institutions as the beginning of a promising relationship, which will enable valuable global dialogues and collaborative opportunities for students and faculty alike.

Law professor Christie S. Warren from William & Mary Law School has played a crucial role in forging the connection between the three institutions. As the 2024-25 Fulbright-Lund distinguished chair in international law, she has engaged in teaching and research at both Lund Faculty of Law and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute. Her work primarily focuses on the role of constitutions and charters in stateless communities, underscoring the intersection of law and human rights.

Warren has a history of involvement with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, having participated in various projects and delivered talks on human rights issues worldwide. This agreement is viewed as a foundational step for long-term collaboration between the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, William & Mary Law School, and the faculty and students at both institutions, enriching academic experiences and fostering interdisciplinary initiatives.

Adding a personal dimension to the collaboration, Warren has historical ties to Raoul Wallenberg, a figure known for his humanitarian efforts during World War II. Her past experiences, particularly following her escape from a Nazi slave-labor camp, give her work with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute a profound significance. Through this partnership, Warren anticipates that her teaching and research, as well as her involvement in fieldwork, will be deeply enriched, benefiting her students and the broader community.

The establishment of this memorandum of agreement marks a pivotal moment in global legal education, reinforcing the import of international collaboration in addressing contemporary legal challenges and human rights issues. Through joint projects, exchange programs, and shared research initiatives, William & Mary Law School, Lund University, and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute aim to cultivate a robust framework for future cooperation.

This collaborative effort is not only expected to produce scholarly advancements but also to inspire a new generation of legal scholars and practitioners equipped to address the complexities of global law and human rights. Additionally, the partnership promises to facilitate enriching cultural and academic exchanges, allowing students and faculty to engage in constructive dialogues across borders.

As the legal landscape continues to evolve in response to global challenges, this memorandum of agreement signals a commitment from all parties involved to work together and enhance legal education on an international scale.
