Construction site of the Greater Williamsburg Sports Center

News Summary

Williamsburg’s Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority has unanimously approved a $36.1 million budget allocated for the construction of the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Event Center. The budget includes significant funds for construction and operational costs, and aims to create a state-of-the-art sports facility that will boost local sports tourism and economic growth. The center is projected to open in summer 2026 and will include numerous sports amenities, solidifying Williamsburg’s role as a hub for sporting events.

Williamsburg Approves $36.1 Million Budget for Greater Sports Center

Williamsburg has approved a $36.1 million budget for the fiscal year 2026 dedicated to the ongoing construction of the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Event Center. The budget received unanimous approval from the members of the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority during a specially-called meeting at the Stryker Center in Williamsburg.

Of the total budget, $30.5 million is earmarked for remaining construction costs, while $1.8 million will cover operational expenses. This collaborative project brings together the resources of Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Colonial Williamsburg, and Visit Williamsburg to create a state-of-the-art sports facility.

Funding Breakdown

The financial contributions from local authorities are as follows: Williamsburg will provide $586,274 in operating revenue for fiscal year 2026; James City County is contributing $542,302; and York County will supply $321,424. Additional operational subsidies totaling $1.6 million will come from both James City County and York County.

The total operational expenditures for the upcoming fiscal year are projected to be $1.8 million, with the majority allocated for employee salaries and promotional activities. This budget expects to result in an operating income of $1.2 million.

Center Management and Staffing

A closed session was held to discuss the hiring process for key positions at the center, including an executive director and a sales and marketing director. Ben Hardouin has been designated as the center’s general manager, and the list of candidates for the executive director role has been narrowed down to five prospects.

To manage the operations of the new sports center, KemperSports, a recognized golf and sports management company, has been selected.

Construction Update and Facilities Features

Construction of the sports center began last year, with an opening slated for summer 2026. Currently, the facility is about 60% complete and is actively booking events. So far, there are 30 booked dates, which include nine weekend events for 2026, 25 weekend bookings in 2027, and five weekends in 2028.

The groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated recently, taking place adjacent to the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. The new facility will span 200,000 square feet and will host an impressive array of sporting amenities including 12 basketball courts that can be converted to 24 volleyball courts and 36 pickleball courts. Additional features include a climbing wall, ninja gym equipment, and a versatile turf system.

Project Significance

The establishment of the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Event Center is expected to enhance sports tourism and stimulate economic growth within the region. Development plans have already received the green light from the Williamsburg City Council, the James City County Board of Supervisors, and the York County Board of Supervisors back in December 2023.

As the project moves closer to completion, stakeholders and community members alike are optimistic about its potential to transform Williamsburg into a hub for sports events and activities, benefiting both residents and visitors.
