Williamsburg, Virginia—A Community Mourns the Loss of Philip Kuehnert
The heart of Williamsburg is heavy as we say goodbye to an inspirational figure, Philip Kuehnert, who passed away recently at the age of 75. A beloved Lutheran pastor and passionate advocate for the community, Philip dedicated his life to serving others and spreading kindness wherever he went.
A Family Legacy of Faith
Philip was no stranger to the pastoral life, having been born into a family of Lutheran ministers. He was the son, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, brother, uncle, and father-in-law to Lutheran pastors, making faith and service a foundation of his upbringing. He kicked off his own ministry after graduating from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, back in 1969 and was ordained in June 1971, eagerly stepping into a life dedicated to his faith.
Ministry and Mentorship Across the Country
His journey took him from the vibrant streets of New Orleans to the sprawling communities of Atlanta and eventually to the stunning landscapes of Fairbanks, Alaska. Philip completed further graduate work at respected institutions, adding depth to his understanding and practice of ministry. He retired from active parish ministry in 2010, but not before making a significant impact in the lives of countless people.
A Life Full of Love and Adventure
Philip’s life was wonderfully intertwined with that of his beloved wife, Judith Louise Wedig, who passed away earlier this year after 55 years of marriage. Together, they created a life filled with joy, health, and engaging worshipping communities. Upon retirement, the couple enjoyed splitting time between their homes in beautiful Nelson County and historic Williamsburg, where they embraced the active lifestyle of avid cyclists. They even completed six bike tours in Europe and explored countless bike trails throughout the Eastern United States.
Even after Judith’s passing, Philip didn’t let life’s challenges slow him down. He kept the spirit of adventure alive, often traveling across the country to spend precious moments with family and friends. Just weeks before his own passing, he made a heartfelt return to Fairbanks for a ten-day reunion with friends and former parishioners, a testament to his enduring connections.
A Musical Soul
Music was a large part of Philip’s life. He had a remarkable talent for playing the piano, organ, and trombone, and he loved to sing! His passion for music also led him to collaborate on 16 devotional videos that enriched the worship experience for many. He even played trombone in a local group in Charlottesville, further nurturing his community ties.
Champion for the Community
Philip’s contributions went far beyond the pulpit. He founded a Samaritan Counseling Center in Fairbanks, serving as a pastoral counselor for nearly 25 years. His commitment to good causes helped establish various Lutheran Child Development Centers and the Open Arms Institute. Additionally, Philip was a passionate advocate for sensible gun laws after surviving a gun violence incident in 1972, showcasing his resilience and unwavering spirit.
A Legacy of Words and Wisdom
As a storyteller and mentor, he dedicated his time to writing. Philip authored a weekly “Monday Morning Encouragement” letter aimed at Stephen Ministers, as well as several letters for his granddaughters—a true testament to his love for family. Despite facing health issues due to chronic surgeries, he continued to uplift others through his writings and community efforts.
Honoring Philip’s Life
Philip is survived by his four children, who together with his grandchildren and great-granddaughters will cherish his incredible legacy. A funeral service to honor Philip Kuehnert will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Williamsburg on May 12 at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to share breakfast and remembrances starting from 7:00 a.m. As a reminder of his impact, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the “Phil & Judy Kuehnert Scholarship Fund” at King of Glory School.
The community will undoubtedly feel the loss of this remarkable man, but his contributions and faith-filled life will be remembered and cherished by many.
