Williamsburg is set to open a new police station aimed at enhancing community policing. This transition is a significant update to public safety infrastructure as the existing station will be demolished upon completion. The city prioritizes community engagement with designs focusing on accessibility and practicality for both the police force and the public.
Williamsburg is set to unveil its new police station on December 14, 2025, as the city aims to enhance modern community policing. The construction of the facility, which is located on Lafayette Street, has been underway since April 2024 and comes at a cost of approximately $19.2 million.
The new police station will cover an area of 43,400 square feet and is designed to replace the existing police station located on Armistead Avenue. Key features of the new facility include a state-of-the-art property and evidence facility, a specially designed sally port for suspect transfers, and a community room with a seating capacity of 70 for local events.
The design also incorporates a dedicated interview room for assisting crime victims and their families, a lactation room to support female officers, and a quiet room for officers needing rest or dealing with trauma. Additionally, there will be a fitness and wellness space available for the police force, promoting their overall health and effectiveness.
In preparation for the new station, the Williamsburg City Council approved a $435,000 purchase agreement for office furniture, which includes desks, file cabinets, chairs, and tables. Furthermore, a right-of-way agreement has been established with Dominion Energy to facilitate the installation of electrical service lines and electric vehicle chargers for the new station, enhancing its operational capabilities.
Chief Sean Dunn has emphasized that this project is the largest he has overseen, navigating through challenges during its design phase, including the need for an addendum of 30,000 additional square feet of usable office space. The construction company, Henderson, achieved this by expanding the basement area and adding an additional 8,000 square feet on the roof of the building.
Once the new facility is completed, the old police station, located at the corner of Lafayette Street and Armistead Avenue, next to the Williamsburg Regional Library, will be demolished, marking a significant update in the city’s public safety infrastructure.
This new police station will not only provide modern amenities for law enforcement but also demonstrate a commitment to community engagement through its design and facilities. The plan incorporates both practicality for the officers and accessibility for the public, ensuring that the needs of the community are met alongside the operational demands of the police force.
