Team members expressed personal growth through their experiences, and future events are planned to further cultivate local poetry appreciation.

Williamsburg – Williamsburg’s Slam Connection poetry team celebrated a remarkable achievement on May 30, by securing first place at the Virginia Team Poetry Slam Championship held at the Kimball Theatre. This triumphant event saw the team compete fiercely against five other local poetry groups, showcasing their talents in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 150 attendees.

The competition featured several notable teams, including Rich Ink, Verb Benders, Spellbound Poetry Slam, Writer’s Den, and Slam Richmond. The success of Slam Connection at this event reflects the growing momentum and appreciation for poetry in the state of Virginia.

LaCroy Nixon, who serves as Williamsburg’s poet laureate and is the founder of Slam Connection, highlighted the overwhelming energy of the event, describing it as “electric.” Nixon remarked on the cohesive nature of Virginia’s poetry scene, emphasizing both the increasing quantity and quality of artistic expression found within these performances.

Following their victory at the state level, Slam Connection took their talents to the 33rd annual Southern Fried Poetry Slam, which occurred from June 11-14 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Competing against an impressive 32 teams from across the United States, the team achieved a commendable sixth place finish. This marked their first foray into national competition, which Nixon described as “incredibly humbling” for the team.

Team members expressed their personal experiences, with Laraya Billups noting her sense of worth within the Slam Connection community during her debut year of competition. Similarly, Imajyn Carter shared that the overall experience had a transformative impact on her perspective of poetry and performance.

With plans to return to the Southern Fried Poetry Slam next year, Nixon has already begun preparations for their next competition, scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida. To build on their success, she aims to organize monthly slam events starting in September while also fundraising to support the team’s travel costs for future events.

Slam Poetry Explained

Slam poetry represents a dynamic form of spoken-word poetry that is performed live, focusing on a powerful and expressive delivery. It allows poets to convey their messages directly to the audience, often invoking strong emotional responses. Through competitions, poets are given the opportunity to showcase their creativity and artistic chops in a supportive and vibrant environment.

The achievements of Williamsburg’s Slam Connection poetry team highlight the dedication and passion present in the local poetry scene. As they continue to build momentum and engage with the community, their future endeavors are set to inspire more individuals to appreciate the beauty of spoken word and the art of slam poetry.

With community support and ongoing passion for the craft, Williamsburg’s Slam Connection appears poised for further success both in local and national poetry circuits.
