Williamsburg is set to celebrate its title as the Pancake Capital of the World with its inaugural Pancake Festival scheduled for September 26-27. The festival is organized by Visit Williamsburg in partnership with CultureFix.

The Pancake Festival will commence on National Pancake Day, which falls on Friday, September 26. The opening evening is a ticketed event held at the Hellenic Center from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to don their favorite pajamas for a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Attendees will enjoy a variety of breakfast favorites, as well as live music from the Tidewater Drive Band. A special feature of the evening is the “Pancake Lab,” where children can decorate their own pancakes. Additional entertainment includes face painting for children, making the festival a family-friendly event.

On Saturday, September 27, the festival will shift outdoors to Duke of Gloucester Street in Merchant’s Square. This outdoor portion of the event will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon and coincide with the local Farmers Market. Numerous family-oriented activities are planned for the day, including the Sausage Sprint, a dachshund race presented by Zoom Room. Alongside this, there will be a pancake-themed children’s book reading and the highly anticipated World Pancake Eating Championship.

This competitive eating event will feature renowned professional eaters, such as Miki Sudo and Nick Wehry, who will compete for the title of pancake-eating champion. The contest is sponsored by Colonial Williamsburg and promises to draw a crowd eager to witness the exciting spectacle.

In conjunction with the festival, Visit Williamsburg and the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce are launching the Pancake Trail. This initiative encourages both locals and visitors to explore the city’s breakfast scene by visiting various pancake restaurants. Participants can download the Pancake Trail on their smartphones and accumulate points by checking in at participating establishments.

Restaurants involved in the Pancake Trail include popular spots such as Shorty’s Diner in Yorktown, the Astronomical Pancake House, and the Southern Pancake Waffle House. Those who complete the Pancake Trail will have the opportunity to earn points towards a keepsake T-shirt and a ticket to the festival’s opening event.

Ticket prices for the festival’s opening night are set at $20 for adults and $15 for teenagers. Children and college students can enjoy free admission, as can those who take part in the Pancake Trail challenge.

This new festival aims not only to celebrate Williamsburg’s rich pancake heritage but also to create an annual tradition that brings the community together and showcases the plethora of pancake dining options available in the area. With more pancake house restaurants than any other town, the festival represents a significant event for both residents and visitors alike.
