News Summary

Williamsburg has introduced the Descendant Scholarship Program, aimed at addressing historical racial disparities. Announced recently, the initiative will provide Black residents with financial aid for education based on ancestral ties, as guided by the Williamsburg Truth and Reconciliation Committee. The program offers up to $5,400 annually for eligible students, creating pathways to educational equity for historically marginalized communities.

Williamsburg has officially launched its Descendant Scholarship Program, designed to address the racial disparities arising from generations of systemic racism. Announced on August 2, the program recently named its inaugural recipients, marking a significant step toward educational equity for Black residents with ancestral ties to the area.

The scholarship program was established following recommendations from the Williamsburg Truth and Reconciliation Committee, which was formed by the City Council in 2021 to confront and rectify historical injustices. The Williamsburg Community Foundation has been tasked with administering the scholarship, ensuring expert oversight and support for the beneficiaries.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be residents of the greater Williamsburg area and must have Black ancestors who lived in the region prior to 1964. The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $5,400 annually for educational expenses, which can be utilized for a maximum of four years. This initiative received its initial funding through a generous $250,000 donation from the City of Williamsburg.

The first recipients of the scholarship include:

  • Tasja Bartlett – planning to graduate from ECPI University’s Medical Radiography program.
  • Brandon Freeman – set to study civil engineering at Christopher Newport University while also playing on the basketball team.
  • Nasir Simms – enrolling at Virginia Union University to pursue a degree in Computer and Information Sciences.
  • Corniya Taylor – aiming to attend Virginia Peninsula Community College to earn an associate degree in health science.

The application process emphasizes personal narratives rather than biological verification. Applicants are required to provide written accounts outlining their connections to their ancestry as well as their educational aspirations, eliminating the necessity for DNA testing or lineage documentation. This approach aims to foster participation and inclusivity among eligible students.

A volunteer committee conducted the selection process using a blind review method, focusing on the merits of the applicants’ narratives without prior bias toward their identities. This method ensures that the decision-making process remains fair and equitable, aligning with the program’s overarching goal to uplift educational opportunities for descendants of historically marginalized communities.

City officials have expressed support for the scholarship program, viewing it as a crucial step toward healing and achieving equity within the Williamsburg community. The City Council unanimously approved the initiative, underlining a collective commitment to address not only historical injustices but also contemporary racial disparities that persist today.

The Descendant Scholarship Program exemplifies a proactive approach to confronting long-standing inequalities and is positioned as a vital resource for fostering educational achievements within the Black community in Williamsburg. By investing in the futures of these young individuals, the program aspires to create a more equitable educational landscape, providing them with the necessary support to succeed in their higher educational pursuits.
