Williamsburg, VA – Wolfgang “Wolf” Werner Ernst Koenig, a beloved community leader and devoted family man, passed away on September 23, 2025, at his home in Williamsburg from heart failure. He was 89 years old.

Born on May 3, 1936, in Basel, Switzerland, to parents Werner and Else Koenig, Wolf’s family relocated to New Bedford, MA, in 1939. As an only child, he grew up excelling in academics, soccer, and music, particularly playing the piano and organ at their Lutheran church. He developed lifelong passions for the beach, sailing, and attending concerts.

Wolf attended Muhlenberg College, an all-male Lutheran college in Allentown, PA, where he studied Economics, served as captain of the soccer team, and became a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. In his senior year, he was elected President of the Student Council while also participating in Army ROTC. His college years were marked by a significant relationship that led to his marriage to Miriam “Mimi” Davis in 1958, whom he met at a college party.

The couple settled in Shrewsbury, NJ, where they raised their two children, Lynn and David. During his early years in Shrewsbury, Wolf served on the Shrewsbury Borough Council as Finance Chair from 1968 to 1973. Together, Wolf and Mimi were active members of the United Methodist Church in Red Bank, with Wolf serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher, while Mimi contributed as a soprano soloist.

Wolf had a successful career in banking, rising to senior executive roles at Irving Trust and The Bank of New York, including international banking experience in Asia and Europe. His professional journey took the family to Summit, NJ, in 1973, where he continued his involvement with Central Presbyterian Church and joined the Muhlenberg College Board of Trustees. His contributions to the college were recognized when he received the Muhlenberg Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award during his 30th Reunion.

In 1998, after dedicating 40 years to the banking industry, Wolf retired and he and Mimi moved to Governor’s Land in Williamsburg, VA, in search of community, culture, and a vibrant lifestyle. In this new chapter, Wolf became actively involved in local volunteering, serving on multiple boards and assisting at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. He also taught English to recent refugees through the Literacy for Life program at William and Mary.

Wolf was a dedicated grandfather, cherishing time spent with his five grandchildren, Scott Kellner, Meghan Kellner, Danielle Morrissey, Jordan White, and Reina Koenig, enjoying skiing trips and various family outings.

Wolf is survived by his daughter Lynn Koenig (William Sorensen) of Salt Lake City, UT, and son David Koenig (Rosy) of Williamsburg, VA. His enduring legacy continues through his family and the community he cherished.

A memorial service to honor Wolf’s life will be held on November 15, 2025, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the Koenig family requests that donations be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church’s Guatemala Mission School.

Wolf Koenig will be remembered fondly by friends and family for his integrity, kindness, humor, and his guiding motto: “Take good care.” His life’s contributions to the community and dedication to his family stand as a testament to his character and the love he shared with those around him.
