Artists' interpretations displayed side by side with original photographs at the WCAC.
The Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center is expanding its popular Camera to Brush & Beyond exhibit into a full exhibition for the first time. Opening to the public, this new format allows for a greater selection and space for artists to showcase their unique interpretations of photographs. Participants can expect a dynamic display of various artistic mediums, alongside opportunities to explore additional exhibits and the artisan corner. With free admission, the center aims to be an accessible cultural hub for the community.
Williamsburg – The Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCAC) is expanding its Camera to Brush & Beyond exhibit into a full exhibition for the first time, set to open to the public on Wednesday, July 30, and will remain on display until September 12. This new extended format signifies a notable change for the exhibit, which has attracted a diverse crowd of photographers, artists, and art enthusiasts over the years, but has typically been confined to the smaller Fireside Gallery.
For the 2023 exhibit, works will not only be showcased in the Fireside Gallery but will also fill WCAC’s larger main and middle galleries, providing more space for the participating artists and a broader selection for attendees. The exhibit consists of a collaborative process where WCAC member photographers submit one or more photographs to the center. These submitted photographs are then pooled together, allowing artists to choose a photograph that resonates with them for creative interpretation.
Each participating artist will present their unique artistic interpretation of the selected photograph, and exhibit goers can expect to see both the original photo and the subsequent artwork displayed side by side. The versatility of the exhibit is reflected in the variety of mediums that can be utilized for these artistic transformations. This includes three-dimensional works such as fiber art, jewelry, and ceramics, allowing for a dynamic array of expressions that transcend traditional two-dimensional formats.
In addition to the Camera to Brush & Beyond exhibit, WCAC members can also enter works for the Study of Trees exhibit, which will also be displayed in the Fireside Gallery. This initiative encourages artists to explore natural themes through their chosen mediums and styles, providing yet another opportunity for creative expression within the arts community.
Aside from exhibitions, visitors can explore the Artisan Corner, which is adjacent to the Fireside Gallery, and features numerous three-dimensional art pieces. This area includes offerings such as pottery, jewelry, and fiber art, allowing for a unique shopping experience where all artwork is available for sale. WCAC prides itself on being an accessible cultural hub as admission to the center is free and open to the public.
Those interested in visiting WCAC will find the center situated in the Blue Building at 110 Westover Ave. The gallery operates business hours from Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to visit the center during these times and experience the range of art that is available throughout the summer.
The expansion of Camera to Brush & Beyond not only marks an exciting development for WCAC but also reflects the growing demand for diverse artistic platforms. As the exhibit opens its doors to the public later this month, it promises a captivating experience for art lovers and community members alike. More information regarding current and upcoming exhibits, as well as programs, can be found by visiting the WCAC website.
