Newport News, Va. – THRIVE Peninsula is launching a new initiative called “Sabor Familiar” to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, which aims to provide culturally relevant foods to local Spanish-speaking families. Starting Monday, the program will serve over 40 families each week with authentic Latin American staples. The effort underscores the organization’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity while addressing food insecurity in the community.

THRIVE, a faith-based nonprofit organization, plans to welcome all shoppers who are interested in exploring these unique food offerings. This initiative, which translates to “Taste of Home,” emphasizes the importance of food that evokes comfort and feelings of belonging, particularly for families who may be missing the tastes and traditions of their culture.

In addition to the food pantry expansion, THRIVE has enhanced its bilingual services, making it easier for Spanish-speaking families to access a wider range of support. These services now include financial assistance, legal aid, and various community resources designed to meet the specific needs of these families.

To further celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, THRIVE Peninsula will host a Community Mixer on Tuesday, September 16, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 12749 Nettles Drive in Newport News. The event aims to engage community leaders, business owners, and residents in a celebration of Hispanic culture and the contributions of the Latin American community. It is positioned as an opportunity for individuals to connect and learn more about the resources available to them within the community.

THRIVE Peninsula has been making significant strides in supporting families facing economic hardships in the Newport News area, as well as in Hampton, Yorktown, and Poquoson. Since relocating to a new facility in 2023, the organization has notably assisted more than 55,000 individuals by providing groceries, financial aid, and other essential services.

The “Sabor Familiar” initiative aligns with THRIVE’s broader mission to alleviate hunger and strengthen community ties. By offering culturally appropriate foods, the program not only helps to satisfy nutritional needs but also promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse culinary traditions. The overall goal is to cultivate an inclusive environment where all community members feel valued and supported.

The ongoing efforts by THRIVE Peninsula exemplify how local organizations can play a vital role in enhancing the well-being of communities, particularly those grappling with economic challenges. With Hispanic Heritage Month providing a backdrop, the “Sabor Familiar” initiative supports not just the immediate food needs of families but also fosters a sense of dignity and belonging through culturally significant eating experiences.

For more information about the “Sabor Familiar” program or the upcoming Community Mixer, residents are encouraged to reach out to THRIVE Peninsula directly or visit their newly established location.
