Williamsburg, Virginia – Robert “Bob” Ellis Cole, a cherished family patriarch and respected Air Force veteran, passed away on Friday morning, August 27th, 2025, at the age of 88. Bob, who defined himself primarily as “retired military,” was a prominent figure in his community and an unwavering source of support for his family.
Born on July 28th, 1937, in War, West Virginia, Bob was the son of the late Robert Ernest and Stella Vance Cole. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lillie Jerelene Cole, with whom he joyfully shared 68 years of marriage. Together, they raised four children: three daughters, Gailey Darlynn Campbell (married to Steve), Bobbie Sharee Ward (married to Mikel), Janet Renee Davenport (married to Hoyt), and a son, Robert Ellis Cole Jr. (married to Carrie). Bob was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 23 great-grandchildren.
Bob graduated from Tazewell High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for 20 years. His military career took him to various assignments across the United States as well as overseas in France and Germany, which he often described as some of the most rewarding experiences of his life. Following his tenure in the military, Bob and his family settled in Williamsburg, Virginia, where their home became a vibrant gathering place filled with love, laughter, and music.
Known for his playful spirit and mischievous nature, Bob cultivated an environment that encouraged family bonding and joy. He exemplified commitment to his loved ones, actively participating in his children’s upbringing and instilling values of independence, discipline, and strength. Bob taught his children various skills such as water skiing, motorcycle riding, and firearm safety, nurturing their growth and development. As a grandfather, he remained engaged and playful, participating in games and activities with his grandchildren that reinforced family connections.
The elder Cole had a deep appreciation for music, enjoying a variety of genres, including Country Western, Classic Church Hymns, and Big Band. He lived a dynamic lifestyle filled with hobbies such as running, boating, golfing, and car care. Additionally, Bob was an avid gun collector and enjoyed roller skating, often sharing these interests with his family and friends.
Bob is preceded in death by his two sisters, Patricia and LeeAnna Cole. As the family prepares to honor him, a celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Williamsburg Christian Church. Visitation for friends and family will begin at 2 PM, followed by the service at 3 PM. Bob will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, with burial arrangements to take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the Cole family requests that donations be made to wreathsacrossamerica.org as a tribute to Bob’s legacy and service.
