Williamsburg, VA – Ruth Slifer Geary, a cherished educator and music lover, passed away on October 11, 2025, at the age of 75. Known for her vibrant personality and dedication to both children and the arts, Ruth touched the lives of many during her lifetime.

Ruth Slifer Geary was born in Suffern, NY, and grew up in Ramsey, NJ. She graduated from Ramsey High School, where she was actively involved in girls’ softball, cheerleading, and church league basketball. She later pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri. After earning her degree, Ruth continued her education and earned a Master of Arts in Education from St. Peter’s College in New Jersey.

After spending over 20 years living in Glen Rock, NJ, Ruth moved to Virginia after her retirement from teaching. She dedicated a significant portion of her career to Garfield Middle School in Garfield, NJ, where she influenced countless students through her passion for teaching.

A lover of music, Ruth was deeply involved in her local church choir and was the founder of a vocal group named Brothers in Song, which performed throughout Northern New Jersey. Her passion for singing and dancing remained a part of her life into her later years, with her most recent engagement being at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Virginia.

Ruth’s devotion to her family was unwavering, particularly to her daughter, Erin. She traveled extensively across the U.S., Canada, and Ireland to support Erin in her Irish dance competitions. This family commitment showcased Ruth’s encouragement and enthusiasm for her daughter’s pursuits.

In addition to her love of music and family, Ruth was also an ardent animal lover. She volunteered for numerous rescue organizations and fostered many pets, providing them with permanent homes when possible. Her dedication to animal welfare remained a significant aspect of her life.

At the time of her passing, Ruth was survived by her daughter, Erin Elizabeth Geary, and her fiancé, Christopher Lundy. She also leaves behind her brother, Donald J. Slifer, and his wife, Jackie, along with their son, Shaun.

A visitation for Ruth will take place at Nelsen Funeral Home, located at 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA, on October 24 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during this time.
