Williamsburg, VA – Remembering Ruth Carole Fraser: A Life of Passion, Education, and Community Service

Ruth Carole (Rea) Fraser, an influential educator and beloved community member, passed away at the age of 83 on August 13, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Known for her commitment to education and her vibrant spirit, Ruth leaves behind a legacy that touched countless lives.

Born on July 29, 1942, in Newton, Kansas, Ruth was the daughter of Harold Hugh Rea and Elinor Lucile Rea. Her dedication to learning was evident from an early age, graduating with high honors from Halstead High School in 1960. During her high school years, she was actively involved in various extracurricular activities, including playing the saxophone in the school band, serving as the President of the Y-Teens, and co-editing the yearbook.

Following high school, Ruth pursued her education at Kansas State University, earning a BA in Spanish, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1964, and holding the position of Vice President of the Chi Omega sorority. Continuing her academic journey, she attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque for graduate studies in Spanish and French, where she met her husband, Howard Fraser.

Ruth dedicated her professional life to teaching, imparting her passion for languages at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg. Even after her retirement, she remained active in the education community through her involvement with the WJCC Retired Teachers’ Association and Delta Kappa Gamma International. Ruth continued to inspire lifelong learning by creating lesson plans for “The Spanish Table” at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

In addition to her educational contributions, Ruth had a profound love for music. She was a founding member of the choir at the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church, participated in the Williamsburg Choral Guild, and played the piano daily. Music was an integral part of her life, and she often played for friends and family on request. Her enthusiasm extended to participating in several recorder groups and traveling for practices and performances.

Ruth’s passion for community service and helping others also shone through her volunteer work. She actively participated in language scholarship committees and assisted English learners, all while advocating for those less fortunate in her community. Her strong values were evident in her desire to be remembered as someone who exemplified fairness and love.

Family was central to Ruth’s life. She enjoyed hosting gatherings, such as lunches, dinners, and cookie-baking events. She cherished time spent traveling to Kansas and Nebraska to visit family, particularly enjoying traditional events like ‘Old Settlers Day’ in Halstead. Ruth’s holidays were filled with celebrations alongside her children and granddaughter, Zoey Garrett.

Ruth’s personal style made her easily recognizable, characterized by her affinity for turquoise jewelry and owl motifs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Michael Fraser; her parents; and her siblings. She is survived by her children, Megan Fraser and Ben Fraser, along with her granddaughter Zoey Garrett, and numerous relatives and friends.

A celebration of Ruth’s life is scheduled to take place at the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church on September 14, 2025, at 2 PM. The service will be accessible to those unable to attend in person via Zoom. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) or FISH of Williamsburg.

Ruth Carole Fraser’s joyful nature and ability to foster connections will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, creating a lasting impact on her family, friends, and the Williamsburg community.
