Born in 1938, Gibson spent much of his childhood surrounded by family members who had served in World War II, which influenced his strong sense of identity and patriotism. Growing up on farms across North and South Carolina, he developed a deep appreciation for rural life and the early development of the country.
Gibson graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he participated in the Army ROTC program. Following his graduation, he embarked on a 28-year career in the U.S. Army, which included multiple tours in Germany and Vietnam. His service was distinguished, earning him several medals, including the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his courageous contributions during the Vietnam War.
During his service in Germany, Gibson met Hildegard (“Hilde”), who would become his wife. The couple enjoyed 58 years of marriage, during which they built a family that includes their daughter Diane and son Barron. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Carol G. Kanner and brothers David, Steve, Dan, Jack, and Charles Gibson, along with their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene H. and Rachel Hutchison Gibson, and his sister, Marian.
After retiring from the Army, Gibson transitioned into the defense industry, culminating his career at the Institute for Defense Analysis. Throughout his professional life, he was dedicated to serving and protecting his country, continuing his commitment even beyond military service.
In his retirement, Gibson pursued higher education at the College of William and Mary, where he earned a master’s degree and was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. His passion for learning reflected his deep appreciation for world history, culture, and cuisine, developed through his extensive international travels and experiences.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Gibson nurtured a keen interest in nature, particularly in plant and animal life native to his home in Williamsburg. His enthusiasm for avian species was infectious, as he often shared his knowledge and love of wildlife with visitors.
A memorial service honoring Joseph W. Gibson will take place at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg on May 31, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The family encourages those wishing to express their condolences to consider making a donation to Army Emergency Relief or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in lieu of flowers.
