Williamsburg, Virginia – John H. Olson, a revered engineering leader and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, at the age of 81. Surrounded by family at the time of his death, Olson’s life was marked by significant contributions to engineering, mentorship, and a deep commitment to his family.
Born on May 20, 1944, in Queens, New York, Olson was the son of immigrants Marion and Harry Olson. He grew up in Cresskill, New Jersey, where he nurtured a passion for mechanical tinkering and boating, inspired by his father’s interests. Early on, Olson exhibited a strong work ethic, taking on a paper route at the age of 11 and later working on cars during high school to assist his family financially. His long-lasting love story with Linda began in the second grade, culminating in their marriage in October 1967.
His career began after enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1962, where he served honorably in Indiana. Following his military service, Olson pursued higher education, receiving an associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering from RCA Institute in 1968, before advancing to Alfred University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering, graduating cum laude and being inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Upon settling in Horseheads, New York, Olson welcomed two children, Kristin and John, while working as a technician at Sullivan Park Research in Corning. His career continued to flourish as he developed and obtained two U.S. patents in Glass Science and took on various roles at Bendix Automotive, where he received the Bendix Chairman’s Award for Technical Excellence in 1987. As leadership changes occurred, he rose to plant leadership and ultimately became Vice President and General Manager of Siemens Automotive Division, retiring in 2001.
Olson was recognized not only for his technical prowess but also for his commitment to workforce development and education. Frequently invited to speak at industry conferences, he shared valuable insights and fostered a culture of learning and innovation. After retiring, he remained involved in mentoring future leaders at NACOM in Griffin, Georgia, until his final retirement in 2006.
After retiring, Olson and his wife, Linda, settled in Williamsburg, Virginia, where they enjoyed leisure activities like sailing and world travel. Olson was deeply committed to his family, which included his children Kristin (married to Paul) and John (married to Beth), as well as his grandchildren Joshua, Katie, Joey, Julia, and Whitley.
