Donald Wayne Lee, a respected leader and beloved community figure, has passed away at the age of 85. Known for his dedication to family and service, his impactful legacy will be celebrated during a memorial service. Lee’s professional journey included significant roles in finance and substantial contributions to various community organizations, reflecting his commitment to the Arlington and Williamsburg communities.
Williamsburg, Virginia – Donald Wayne Lee, a beloved figure known for his leadership, love for family, and community service, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 85. His life, marked by notable professional achievements and heartfelt connections, has left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Lee was born on October 18, 1939, in Coalgood, Kentucky, to Bill and Leila “Shorty” Lee. He graduated from Tazewell High School in Virginia in 1956 at the young age of 16. Following his high school education, he attended Strayer University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a degree in Accounting. In 1963, Lee successfully passed the CPA exam in Virginia, embarking on a distinguished career in finance.
In the same year, he married Carol Ann Hineman, forming a partnership that would last over six decades. Together, they co-founded a private CPA firm, where their professional journey began. Shortly thereafter, in 1968, Lee invested in Southern Office Supply in Arlington, Virginia. His leadership and vision allowed him to become the sole owner and president of the company, transforming it into the third-largest office products dealer in the D.C. area over the course of 20 years.
Lee also made significant contributions to the banking sector. He joined Arlington Trust Company as an auditor in 1970 and later rose to the role of Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Operations Officer at First American Bank. At this institution, he managed a staff of 700 employees until his retirement in 1989.
A passionate golfer, Lee took up the sport at the age of 20 and achieved several holes-in-one over his lifetime. His commitment to community was evident through his active membership in organizations such as the Exchange Club in Arlington, Virginia, and the Rotary Club in Vienna, Virginia. Additionally, he served as President of the American Heart Association in Arlington and volunteered as a guide for 15 years at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
In 2001, Lee moved to Annapolis, Maryland, to enjoy a life by the water. He later relocated to Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2021. In his later years, he remained an engaged community member at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, known for his warmth, integrity, and leadership.
Donald Lee is survived by his wife, Carol, with whom he shared over 61 years of marriage, as well as their three children: David (Carrie) Lee, Elizabeth Lee, and Robin (Frederick) Marx. He also leaves behind several grandchildren, including Carson and Davis Lee, T.J., Ellee, and Sean Fitzgerald, and Harrison and Sebastian Marx. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings, sisters Betty Lee and Phyllis Gorman, and brother Richard Lee.
A memorial service to celebrate his life is scheduled for July 19, 2025, at 12:00 PM at King of Glory Lutheran Church, located at 4897 Longhill Road, Williamsburg, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jacob’s Ride or King of Glory Lutheran Church, honoring Lee’s commitment to his family and community.
