Hampton, Virginia – Peninsula Pilots Continue Winning Streak with Doubleheader Victories Against Florence Flamingos

The Peninsula Pilots extended their winning streak to six and seven games, respectively, by defeating the Florence Flamingos 4-3 in the first game and 7-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday night. These victories occurred at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, drawing an audience of 1,463 fans.

With these wins, the Pilots have solidified their position at the top of the Coastal Plain League’s East Division, leading by 4 ½ games over competitors such as Wilson and Morehead City.

In the first game, the Pilots surged to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Key contributors included Chris Martinez, who had a run-scoring single, and Isaiah Shivers, who delivered a two-run single. David Stokely also played a significant role, drawing a bases-loaded walk. Although the Flamingos managed to narrow the score to 4-3 in the third inning, Peninsula’s relief pitching was strong; Gardner Meeks, winner Peyton Dhein, and Anthony Roszko effectively combined to allow only two hits and throw four scoreless innings.

The second game saw continued success for the Pilots, with Kyle Edwards from Old Dominion shining as he went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Edwards also made a rare yet notable pitching appearance in the seventh inning, striking out all three batters he faced. Brian Ereu started the second game and threw four innings, contributing to a total of 12 strikeouts recorded by the Pilots’ pitching staff. The second inning was particularly fruitful, as the team scored five runs during that stretch, with Isaiah Shivers crossing the plate twice.

Previous Game Highlights

In college baseball, Harrison Didawick of University of Virginia is leading the NCAA with 23 home runs, tying the program’s single-season record. His contributions helped the Cavaliers make it to the College World Series, where they are set to face North Carolina.

On the professional front, Henry Godbout, a shortstop from Virginia, was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 75th pick in the MLB Draft, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Meanwhile, in other local sports, the Hampton Roads 7 Cities Pro-Am Summer League saw ECG triumph over NewRunz with a score of 86-66, where Jamari Garnett led with 19 points. The Newport News Gryphons also celebrated a narrow victory against Airstrike, winning 73-66, while Team Swamp defeated Southern Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram-Western Branch 91-78.

Finally, former collegiate athletes Charles Hobbs and Welsh Hotard secured second place in the Princess Anne Country Club Summer Open charity doubles tournament, showcasing their skills in the local circuit, while Kira Matushkina from Old Dominion and Selma Cadar, formerly of Maryland, clinched the women’s draw.
