The Newport News City Council has unanimously approved a 620-unit housing development called Parkside at Endview at the historic Endview Plantation. The project will include single-family homes, townhomes, commercial spaces, and preserved open areas. Despite concerns over traffic, developers plan to implement infrastructure improvements. This collaborative project aims to create a vibrant community while respecting the area’s historical significance.
In a move that’s generating plenty of buzz around town, the Newport News City Council has unanimously approved plans for a sprawling 620-unit housing development located at the historic Endview Plantation. This decision came during a council meeting held on Tuesday, where officials agreed to rezone a vacant lot at 350 Yorktown Road to pave the way for this ambitious project.
The proposed development, aptly named Parkside at Endview, will occupy an impressive 282 acres near Newport News’ boundary with York County. It’s set to feature a diverse mix of housing options, including 393 detached single-family homes and 182 townhomes. But there’s more to this development than just residential space. Developers have earmarked nearly 32,000 square feet for commercial use and a whopping 125 acres will be designated as open space, boasting new trails that will connect to the nearby Newport News Park.
Within this vast tract of land lies the historic Endview House and its outbuildings, which are proud members of the National Register of Historic Places. These structures, steeped in history dating back to the 1760s, once served as a Confederate hospital and headquarters during the Peninsula Campaign back in 1862. Thanks to a memorandum of understanding, efforts will be made to ensure that the historic essence of the site is preserved and promoted, allowing future generations to appreciate its significance.
In response to these concerns, developers are set to take action. They will be implementing transportation improvements that were highlighted in a 2022 traffic impact analysis. Some of the proposed solutions include adding turn lanes on Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road, as well as a brand-new site entrance along Crafford Road. This should help ease the flow of traffic and keep local roads from becoming too congested as the area grows.
This exciting project is not just a solo endeavor; it’s a collaborative effort involving Newport News’ Economic Development Authority, along with major players like D.R. Horton and WeldenField of Virginia. Together, they aim to create a thriving community that balances residential needs with the preservation of the area’s rich history.
As Newport News gears up for this new chapter with the Parkside at Endview development, it promises to bring much-needed housing and retail space to the area. While concerns surrounding traffic and infrastructure have been raised, the city’s commitment to implementing thoughtful transportation solutions should help to mitigate these issues.
With plans in motion and public interest piqued, residents of Newport News and surrounding areas will be watching closely as the vision for Parkside at Endview becomes a reality. This development not only signifies growth but also an opportunity to honor and integrate the historical heritage of Endview Plantation into the fabric of modern life. Let’s hope this venture paves the way for a new and vibrant community that respects the past while looking forward to the future!
