Newport News, Virginia is launching a series of public workshops aimed at engaging local residents in the update of the city’s Comprehensive Plan. This initiative, called “Plan Together: Newport News,” seeks to gather community input on vital topics such as housing, transportation, land use, and economic development.

The workshops are designed as interactive “working sessions” rather than traditional presentations, allowing for active participation from residents. City Manager Alan K. Archer emphasized the importance of resident involvement in shaping the city’s future.

Workshop Schedule and Details

The upcoming workshops will be held at two locations:

  • Brittingham-Midtown Community Center on June 17
  • Denbigh Community Center on June 24

Each location will host two separate sessions:

  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (Dinner will be provided at the evening session)

Opportunities for Participation

During these workshops, residents will have a variety of opportunities to engage in the planning process. Participants can:

  • Identify areas in their neighborhoods that require investment
  • Review and give feedback on preliminary city goals
  • Collaborate with city staff and connect with fellow community members about future plans

The workshops are open to the general public, with no need for prior registration. For residents unable to attend in person, feedback can be submitted online through a survey link that will be provided by the city.

Purpose of the Comprehensive Plan Update

The Comprehensive Plan serves as a foundational document guiding Newport News in decisions regarding development and city services. It outlines the community’s vision and establishes long-term goals to enhance the quality of life for residents. The updated plan aims to reflect the evolving needs and aspirations of Newport News citizens.

By encouraging resident participation in these workshops, city officials hope to create a more inclusive approach to urban planning. Gathering diverse perspectives is a critical step in ensuring that the Comprehensive Plan benefits the entire community.

Each workshop is intended to empower residents while promoting dialogue on essential city development issues. The feedback collected will play a crucial role in tailoring the city’s strategies so that they align with the interests and desires of its residents.

This initiative is part of a broader trend in urban planning, where local governments increasingly recognize the value of community input in decision-making processes.

As Newport News prepares for the workshops, residents are encouraged to be proactive in sharing their insights and visions for the city’s development. These conversations are not just about the present, but also about shaping a sustainable future for forthcoming generations.
