News Summary

Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport has named Chris Morello as its new interim executive director during a period of significant transition. Morello, previously assistant director of the City of Newport News’ Department of Development, aims to support airport operations while implementing recommendations from the Hampton Roads Air Study. This strategic shift focuses on expanding into new aviation markets, including air cargo and electric aircraft, to enhance the airport’s competitiveness and growth potential.

Newport News – Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport has announced the appointment of Chris Morello as the new interim executive director following a leadership transition. His role, which began recently on a loan from the City of Newport News, comes at a significant time for the airport as it seeks to implement recommendations from a recently released study focusing on its future direction.

Morello, who has been with the City of Newport News since 1999, currently serves as the assistant director of the city’s Department of Development. He brings a wealth of experience in public administration to the position, having previously acted as the economic development director for Isle of Wight County from 2018 until his return to Newport News in 2023. In his new interim role, Morello emphasized his commitment to supporting airport management and operations and referred to this opportunity as a ‘privilege’.

The Peninsula Airport Commission and the City of Newport News jointly made the announcement regarding Morello’s appointment. His extensive background in local government operations was a fundamental factor in his selection for this position. The airport is in the middle of an important transition, especially in light of the findings from the Hampton Roads Air Study, which was released in July 2024.

The Hampton Roads Air Study proposed that the airport re-position itself to tap into new markets, including air cargo, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and electric aircraft, while also maintaining its existing tenants. This strategic shift is aimed at transforming Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport into an “Air Commerce Park”, capitalizing on advancements in technology and aviation.

Lindsey Carney, chair of the Peninsula Airport Commission, highlighted Morello’s extensive local government experience as a key element in the decision to appoint him. The commission recognizes the importance of leveraging Morello’s background to ensure a smooth transition during this pivotal period. Mayor Phillip Jones of Newport News also expressed pride in having one of the city’s capable leaders take on such an essential role at the airport.

Holding a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications Journalism from James Madison University, Morello is well-equipped for his role. As interim executive director, he will collaborate closely with airport staff, the Peninsula Airport Commission, and regional stakeholders to execute the critical recommendations set forth by the airport study.

Morello will serve in this capacity until a permanent executive director is appointed. This transitional phase presents both challenges and opportunities for Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, as it strives to adapt to evolving trends in the aviation sector while remaining competitive and relevant. The strategic shifts envisioned by the Hampton Roads Air Study are intended to position the airport for future success and growth in new aviation markets.
