Williamsburg, VA – Memorial Day, observed on Monday, May 26, will result in various closures and changes to services across the Historic Triangle region, which includes James City County, Williamsburg, and York County. Residents are advised to plan accordingly as many local government offices, libraries, and recreational facilities will not be operational.
In James City County, all county offices, facilities, libraries, and courts will be closed on Memorial Day. This includes the James City County Recreation Center and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, both of which will not open to the public on May 26. However, all county parks remain open year-round, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor spaces. The Park Stores and Guest Services Offices will be available for visitors on Memorial Day.
Additionally, residents should note specific closures on Jolly Pond Road, Tewning Road, and Toano Convenience Centers, which will not be open on May 26. The Garbage Transfer Station will also be closed on the holiday. As a result of these closures, curbside recycling in James City County will face delays, with collections originally scheduled for Monday being pushed to Tuesday, and subsequent collections also moving forward a day.
The City of Williamsburg will also observe Memorial Day by closing offices, including those at the Municipal Building and the Quarterpath Recreation Center. However, Waller Mill Park will operate on its usual schedule, open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Garbage collection in Williamsburg will proceed as planned, but recycling collection will be delayed by one day, similar to James City County. For any water emergencies after hours or on holidays, residents are instructed to call 757-220-2331. A 24-hour bill payment dropbox is available at the Municipal Building, although payments made on Memorial Day will not be processed until May 27.
In York County, county courts and offices will close on May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. Residents needing information on the garbage and recycling collection schedule can contact County services at 757-890-3780 or visit the Customer Service Request Portal at yorkcounty.gov/requests.
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties. It is observed on the last Monday of May, marking the unofficial start of summer and serving as a day for Americans to remember the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces. Traditionally, many communities hold parades, memorial services, and various festivities to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in service to the country.
The closing of municipal offices, services, and recreational centers on Memorial Day is a standard procedure across many regions, helping to ensure that both employees and residents have the opportunity to take part in Memorial Day observances. Local parks continue to provide recreational options for families and individuals while waste collection schedules are adjusted for the observed holiday.
Residents are encouraged to check with their local government websites or contact customer service for additional information regarding specific service disruptions during the Memorial Day holiday.
