Virginia-class submarine Arkansas being launched into the James River

News Summary

Newport News Shipbuilding celebrated the launch of the Virginia-class submarine Arkansas, marking a significant milestone for advanced naval technology. This submarine features capabilities in various mission areas and represents a critical modernization of the U.S. Navy fleet. The launch is not only a technological achievement but also honors historical figures in civil rights, enhancing its significance in U.S. history.

Newport News Marks Launch of Virginia-class Submarine Arkansas

Newport News, Virginia – On July 2, 2025, the Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) celebrated the successful launch of the Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) into the James River. This marked a significant milestone in the construction and delivery of advanced naval technology to the U.S. Navy.

The Arkansas transitioned from the construction facility to a floating dry dock before being launched. Following its launch, the submarine was moved to a submarine pier at the shipyard where it will undergo final outfitting, testing, and crew certification, ensuring it meets all operational standards before being officially delivered to the Navy.

As the 27th Virginia-class attack submarine, the Arkansas is noteworthy for being the 13th Virginia-class submarine delivered by NNS to the U.S. Navy. The advanced capabilities and design of the Virginia-class submarines represent a vital part of the United States’ underwater warfare strategy.

Key Features and Strategic Importance

The Arkansas measures 377 feet (114 meters) in length and 34 feet (10.3 meters) in width. It has the ability to dive beyond 800 feet (240 meters) and can operate for extended periods at speeds exceeding 25 knots. Designed to address various mission areas, these submarines are capable of conducting operations in anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and mine warfare.

The development of the Virginia-class submarines serves as a cost-effective alternative to the Cold War-era Seawolf-class submarines, providing an important modernization of the fleet by replacing older Los Angeles-class submarines. The advanced technology incorporated into the Virginia-class enhances firepower, maneuverability, and stealth, making them formidable assets for national defense.

Recognition of Historical Significance

The submarine was christened in a ceremony on December 7, 2024, which not only marked the occasion but also honored the legacy of the Little Rock Nine. The ship’s sponsors consist of the six women known as the Little Rock Nine, recognized for their courageous role in desegregation when they became the first African American students to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. Their historical significance adds a layer of meaning to the Arkansas’ development and eventual deployment.

NNS Vice President of Navy Programs stated that there is palpable pride in the launch, emphasizing the critical role that nuclear-powered submarines like the Arkansas play in bolstering the national security of the United States.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Commitment to National Security

HII stands as the largest military shipbuilder in the nation, employing approximately 44,000 workers over a legacy spanning more than 135 years of advancing U.S. national security interests. The collaboration between NNS and General Dynamics Electric Boat plays a significant role in the construction of these advanced submarines.

The Arkansas will undergo rigorous final outfitting and crew training to prepare for its essential missions. With today’s launch, it reinforces the United States Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong and capable fleet capable of addressing today’s complex challenges in maritime operations.

As the Arkansas prepares for its future roles, it stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to innovation and historical recognition within the U.S. military and the broader context of civil rights.
