James Robert Saunders, a cherished family man and respected community leader, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He leaves behind a legacy marked by his devotion to family and active engagement in community service.

James, affectionately known as Jim, was born on June 5, 1944. He graduated from New Canaan High School in 1962, where he was recognized for his athletic prowess, earning letters in football, basketball, and baseball. His skills on the field were showcased when he played in the prestigious Nutmeg Bowl in 1962. He went on to further his education at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he graduated in 1966 and was a proud member of the varsity baseball team.

In 1967, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Lynne Johannessen. The couple dedicated themselves to raising three children together, with Jim actively involved in coaching them in youth sports including baseball, soccer, and basketball. His commitment to family extended beyond coaching, as he instilled values of perseverance and teamwork in his children.

Jim’s impact on the community was significant. He served on the Planning Board and the Recreation Committee in Stewartsville, New Jersey. Additionally, he was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church in Alpha, New Jersey, where he contributed as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and an active participant in the St. Vincent de Paul society. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, shaping his interactions and his community involvement.

In his professional career, Jim achieved success as a packaging salesman before founding his own company, Princeton Paper and Packaging. He was known for his integrity and earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike, which was a testament to his work ethic and dedication.

Beyond his professional and family life, Jim was passionate about sports such as softball, golf, skiing, and hiking. He enjoyed traveling with Lynne, exploring beautiful destinations including Hawaii, Alaska, San Diego, and Mexico. Alongside his love for sports and travel, Jim had a deep appreciation for music, particularly admiring the work of artists like Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones.

In 2008, Jim and Lynne retired to Williamsburg, Virginia, where Jim enjoyed leading tours and tastings at the Williamsburg Winery. After relocating, he continued to nurture his spiritual life, becoming an active member of St. Bede Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Priscilla Saunders; his brother, Bill Saunders; and his granddaughter, Jamie Lynne Knotts. Jim is survived by Lynne, his wife of 58 years; sons James (Elizabeth) Saunders and Andrew (Erin) Saunders; daughter Kelly (Kurt) Knotts; brother Robert (Robin) Saunders; sister Priscilla (Dave) Shepherd; and grandchildren: Bridget Saunders, James Saunders, Braeden Knotts, Dana Knotts, Taylor Saunders, and Riley Saunders.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at noon at St. Bede Catholic Church, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date in New Canaan, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in James’ name to the Connecticut Children’s Foundation, Inc.

James Robert Saunders will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, steadfast faith, kindness, and a great sense of humor that touched many lives.
