The soon-to-be-built natural playground will inspire creativity and outdoor fun for children.
James City County has approved a $265,599 renovation project to create a natural playground at the local library. Designed to inspire creativity, it will feature climbing mounds, wooden caves, and a variety of other engaging elements. Community support has fueled the project, which aims to enrich family life and promote outdoor activity. Construction is expected to begin soon, with plans for the playground to be completed in approximately five months.
James City County is buzzing with excitement as the Board of Supervisors has just given the green light for a brand new natural playground at the local library! This renovation project comes with a hefty price tag of $265,599 and promises to transform the library’s backyard into a hub of outdoor fun for families.
So, what can the little ones—and their parents—look forward to? The natural playground will feature a host of delightful elements designed to inspire creativity and imagination among children. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store:
This playground is set to be the first of its kind in the Williamsburg area, boasting a unique natural landscape that encourages kids to engage with the world around them.
The ambitious project has received a warm welcome from the community, with significant contributions coming from various local organizations. The project is made possible through generous donations from Friends of the Williamsburg Regional Library and numerous Kiwanis Clubs located in Williamsburg, Colonial Capital, and Toano. It’s amazing to see such support come together for a cause that aims to enrich the lives of children and families in the area!
The idea for this splendid playground was born back in 2018, dreamt up by former director Betsy Fowler of the Williamsburg Regional Library. The concept was inspired by the success of the Kiwanis Kid’s Idea Studio, which cleverly merges the best elements of a children’s museum and library. It’s a wonderful reminder of how creative thinking can lead to something truly special!
The designs for this nature-inspired playground are crafted by Ron King of Natural Playgrounds Co., ensuring a perfect blend of fun, safety, and a genuine connection to nature. In addition to the already listed features, visitors can also look forward to sculptures, outdoor musical instruments, and even hobbit hole caves that will create a magical atmosphere for children to explore.
Beyond mere play, this natural playground is set to have a positive impact on the health of children, parents, and even grandparents! More greenery and outdoor activity can only lead to better mental and physical well-being for families in the community.
Construction on this fun project is estimated to take about five months once it starts, which means the beautiful new playground could be ready just in time for the fall season! Families can start looking forward to some exciting outdoor adventures right in their backyard.
Those interested in keeping up with the playground’s progress can find more information, including details on how to donate and a 3D tour of the planned playground, by visiting wrl.org/wrl-playground. There’s even a YouTube link available for those eager to see what’s in store!
As the project takes shape, the anticipation continues to build in James City County. With such a unique playground on the horizon, children of all ages are sure to create memories that will last a lifetime!
