News Summary

James City County will face major traffic disruptions due to the closure of Six Mount Zion Road from Mount Laurel Road to La Grange Parkway, part of the I-64 Gap Widening Project. The closure is anticipated to last until spring 2026, impacting detours and traffic patterns. The project aims to alleviate congestion and enhance safety along the I-64 corridor. While the road is closed, drivers can use alternative routes and expect ongoing improvements to the highway infrastructure over the next few years.

James City County is set to experience significant disruptions as Six Mount Zion Road will close from Mount Laurel Road to the intersection at La Grange Parkway starting as early as Monday. This closure, prompted by the I-64 Gap Widening Project, is expected to remain in effect until spring 2026.

The I-64 Gap Widening Project aims to reduce congestion and enhance safety along the corridor between Richmond and Hampton Roads. Drivers are advised to follow detour routes utilizing Route 30 (Barhamsville Road) via Fieldstone Parkway or La Grange Parkway while the closure is in effect. Importantly, access to I-64 ramps in the vicinity will remain open throughout this period, and no lane closures are anticipated on I-64 itself during the initial phase of the project.

As part of the comprehensive construction efforts, crews will extend the interstate to three lanes in each direction. In addition to the expansion, there will be a rehabilitation of the bridge over Six Mount Zion Road, with roadway pavement improvements included in the project scope. The overall widening project is scheduled for completion by early 2027, though all construction work will be weather-dependent, and timelines are subject to change.

In addition to the road closure, a long-term traffic shift on I-64 west from just east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit to the New Kent/James City County line is set to commence as early as April 6. This shift will involve overnight single-lane closures from Sunday through Saturday, running from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., for approximately two weeks. During this phase, a temporary traffic barrier will be installed while traffic is gradually shifted five feet to the right. This new traffic configuration is expected to persist through summer 2026.

Drivers may recall that similar traffic shifts were already implemented for the eastbound direction of I-64 back in March. The broader project includes the widening of nine miles of I-64 and general pavement rehabilitation. In addition, the rehabilitation and widening of two bridges over Six Mount Zion Road (for both directions) and the paving of the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot in York County falls under this initiative.

Further improvements included in the I-64 Gap Widening Project consist of introducing overhead signage, advanced traffic management systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls, and necessary storm drainage box culverts and pipes. Collectively, these enhancements are designed to create a safer and more efficient travel experience for all road users.

The I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project is anticipated to be finalized as early as late 2027. As with all substantial roadway projects, it is critical for drivers in the area to remain vigilant for changing traffic patterns and to adhere to posted detours and signage for their safety and convenience.

As construction progresses, local authorities are committed to keeping the community informed of any changes or updates related to the construction schedules and traffic impacts resulting from this extensive roadway project.
