Williamsburg has officially completed the renovations of Highland Park Community Park, enhancing recreational options for families. Williamsburg – The City of Williamsburg celebrated the completion of renovations to Highland Park Community Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Thursday, July 3. This event marks a significant upgrade to the park, which is one of the city’s 12 public parks, aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities for local families.
The newly renovated park features modernized playground equipment and a fully refurbished basketball court. The basketball court has transitioned from a half-court setup to a full court, featuring two hoops to accommodate more players. Significant enhancements to the court include acid washing, crack repairs, and new paint to ensure a safe and enjoyable space for residents.
The renovations followed a two-year collaborative effort between city officials and the Highland Park community, during which residents voiced their preferences for the park’s improvements. As a result of this collaboration, families selected from four designs for the new playground and expressed a desire for a full-court basketball experience, although space limitations prevented the installation of a regulation-sized court.
City Council approved a $117,450 contract with All Recreation in October to undertake the playground and basketball court updates, demonstrating the city’s commitment to enhancing community recreational facilities. Mayor Douglas G. Pons, along with Parks Superintendent Chris Prewitt, Vice Mayor Pat Dent, and Council Member Ayanna Williams, were present at the ceremony, highlighting the significance of public involvement in the design process.
Eletha Davis, a longtime resident of Highland Park and an active member of the civic association, expressed gratitude for the renovations that reflect the community’s needs and desires. The improvements are designed to foster an inclusive environment where families can gather and enjoy outdoor activities in a safe and appealing setting.
