Newport News, VA – Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will be recognized for its 40-year legacy of promoting access to affordable housing during a ceremony on World Habitat Day, October 6. The event will be held at the Newport News ReStore location, beginning at 10 a.m. A commending resolution from the Virginia General Assembly will be presented by Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price, honoring the organization’s contributions to the local community.

The resolution acknowledges Habitat for Humanity for “40 years of promoting access to affordable housing and building stronger communities throughout the Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg.” Since its establishment in 1985, the organization has successfully built and renovated hundreds of homes, significantly impacting the lives of many families.

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg operates with the mission of partnering with families, volunteers, and donors to make affordable housing a possibility. Families who benefit from the program purchase homes through affordable mortgages and actively contribute to the building process by performing sweat equity hours. This involves assisting in the construction of their own home as well as the homes of others, fostering a sense of community involvement and ownership.

Shauntrice Williams, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, stated that the commending resolution serves both as recognition of past achievements and as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to support affordable housing initiatives in the area. The celebration also marks the launch of Habitat ReStore’s eighth anniversary sale at the Chatham Drive location.

Habitat for Humanity operates several ReStore locations, with the first Newport News ReStore opening in 2003 on Warwick Boulevard. These nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers sell new and gently-used items, with all proceeds directed towards funding Habitat home builds. The organization primarily serves the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the surrounding counties.

Community members are encouraged to attend the recognition program and participate in the anniversary festivities. This event provides an opportunity to learn about the impact of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg and get involved in their initiatives aimed at creating affordable housing solutions.
