Williamsburg, Virginia – Visit Williamsburg has launched The Great American Birthday Quilt Project, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. This broad-scale initiative encourages individuals across the nation to “stitch their story” into a monumental quilt that honors the country’s rich history, current status, and aspirations for the future.
The project invites participation from all corners of the U.S., allowing people to handcraft quilt squares that will collectively form a lasting tribute to America. With the intent to create a quilt that will be cherished for generations, the program underscores the importance of personal expression in shaping a collective narrative.
Leading the project is Steve Prince, the director of Engagement and distinguished artist in residence at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary. This collaboration between Prince and Visit Williamsburg aims to connect participants to the Historic Triangle, which encompasses Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. This region holds great historical significance as the site of the first English settlement in North America, the birthplace of American democracy, and a pivotal location for Revolutionary War victories.
Individuals may engage in the project by joining hands-on quilt workshops hosted in selected cities or by creating and submitting quilt squares from home. Notably, no prior sewing experience is required, making the project accessible to everyone as both sewn and glued square submissions will be accepted. Each completed quilt square will reflect unique stories of American pride, history, and hope, further enriching the quilt’s overall narrative.
All materials for the quilt are subject to donations, providing an opportunity for community involvement beyond crafting individual squares. The final assembled quilt is expected to be unveiled in Spring 2026 at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center, following an exhibition at historic sites across the nation.
Participants have until November 30 to submit their panel submissions for the quilt squares, leading up to the final assembly in Spring 2026. The project encourages individuals to connect with each other through shared stories and experiences, much like the collective memory of America itself.
Edward Harris, the CEO of Visit Williamsburg, expressed pride in partnering with Steve Prince for this community-focused initiative. The Historic Triangle will also play host to a range of events linked to the America250 and VA250 celebrations, enhancing the region’s role as a focal point for historical education and public engagement.
The area boasts notable attractions including Colonial Williamsburg, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, Jamestown Settlement, and the amusement park Busch Gardens Williamsburg, providing visitors with a multifaceted understanding of American history while participating in cultural commemorations.
Interested parties can find information about quilt workshops and additional participation details by visiting the project’s official website. The Great American Birthday Quilt Project stands as a unifying endeavor, inviting reflection and giving voice to the myriad stories that comprise the American experience.
