Charles City

Udder Nonsense Creamery, a new establishment specializing in gelato and cheese, is set to open next month at the upcoming Market 5 complex along Route 5 in Charles City. The creamery aims to provide local residents with a selection of homemade gelato flavors and artisanal cheese, sourced directly from nearby dairy cows.

The creamery is co-owned by Steve Rose, Patti Cubstead, and Darin Durham, each bringing diverse experience to the venture. Steve Rose, who has a background in founding other businesses such as Williamsburg Event Rentals and Spoke & Art Provisions Co., also leads the nonprofit organization CultureFix. The creamery operates from a dairy farm situated in Charles City County and shares property with Open Air the Glebe, a wedding venue also launched by Rose.

Udder Nonsense Creamery offers eight delectable gelato flavors including vanilla, strawberry, salted caramel pecan, chocolate, espresso, raspberry cheesecake, chocolate cherry cheesecake, and blueberry lemon cheesecake. The gelato is crafted from milk sourced from the farm’s three productive dairy cows named Harriett, Clarabell, and Hokie. Patti Cubstead oversees the production of both gelato and cheese, focusing on simple recipes that contain no artificial ingredients, ensuring that customers receive high-quality products with every purchase.

As interest grows, there are plans for a fall spiced fig gelato flavor to expand their menu options further. Although an exact opening date for the Market 5 location has yet to be announced, the creamery has been operating since earlier this spring, also selling products at various local venues, including Indian Fields Tavern, Dizzy Izzy’s, and Burgers on the Edge. In addition, consumers will soon have the opportunity to preorder products online with pickup available directly at the farm, located at 12800 The Glebe Lane.

For more details regarding the products or the opening of the Market 5 location, consumers can visit the creamery’s official website at uddernonsensecreamery.com.

This anticipated 25,000-square-foot facility is expected to debut in the fall of 2026 and will feature discounted prices on apparel, accessories, and home décor, contributing to the growth of retail options in the region.
