Williamsburg mourns the loss of Frank Hermes, a cherished community member who passed away at 82. His legacy, enriched by family, sports passion, and musical talent, will continue to inspire those he touched. Funeral services are scheduled for February 1.
Williamsburg is mourning the loss of a beloved community member. Frank Hermes, known for his warm smile and friendly demeanor, passed away at the age of 82 on January 21, surrounded by his cherished wife, Cindie. The passing of Frank resonates deeply among family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched throughout his vibrant journey.
Frank leaves behind a loving family, including his son Jim Hermes and daughter-in-law Lisa, along with his daughter Liz Riemersma and son-in-law Kier. He was especially proud of his grandsons: Taylor, Jack, and Rocky, who brought immense joy to his life. With a family like this, it’s easy to see just how much love and support surrounded Frank during his lifetime.
Originally hailing from New Rochelle, NY, Frank had a rich upbringing in New Canaan, CT. His passion for learning led him to graduate from Dartmouth College in 1965, paving the way for an accomplished career ahead. After college, Frank served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, VA, where he continued to embrace new experiences and challenges.
After his time in the military, Frank brought his talents to the marketing world, working with notable companies like Citicorp and Standard & Poor’s. His keen insights and strategic thinking made him a sought-after consultant, eventually joining Atlas Systems in Virginia Beach where he continued to make an impact until his later years.
Life took a beautiful turn for Frank and Cindie, as they embarked on their honeymoon in the historic charm of Colonial Williamsburg. It was a moment that set the stage for their life together, eventually moving to Ford’s Colony in Williamsburg in 2012. This charming community became the backdrop of many fond memories and connections for the couple.
Frank was not just about work; he was a sports fan with a big heart. He passionately supported New York-based teams, particularly the New York Giants, but he also embraced The Ohio State Buckeyes, showcasing his love for the game. He loved coaching his children in soccer and baseball, sharing valuable lessons the sports field offers. Beyond coaching, Frank enjoyed playing tennis, paddleball, and golf, staying active and energizing his spirit.
Music was another passion that filled Frank’s life with joy. He was known for his beautiful singing voice, contributing to church choirs with the latest being at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Colonial Williamsburg. Music flowed through his veins, and Frank showcased his musical talent playing the trombone in school bands and even in jazz and marching bands during his service in the Army. You could often find him engaging in deeper musical moments, sharing this love with his community.
In addition to his artistic talents, Frank had a brilliant mind. He was known to tackle the New York Times crossword puzzle nearly every day, stimulating his mind while enjoying the challenge. Additionally, he developed an appreciation for fine wines, diving into new flavors and finding joy at the dinner table with family and friends.
To honor and celebrate Frank’s remarkable life, funeral services will take place at 12:00 PM on Saturday, February 1, at the Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Williamsburg. Following the service, there will be a warm reception at the Custis House across from the church, bringing together those who loved him. For those who wish to honor Frank’s memory with heartfelt gestures, donations can be made to the FISH Williamsburg Food Pantry and Clothing, supporting the community he cherished.
Frank Hermes may be gone, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of many. His spirit, warmth, and love for life remind us all to cherish every moment, embrace our passions, and support those we care about.
