Williamsburg – Dylan Demetyre Pritchett Sr., a renowned storyteller celebrated for his contributions to African American history, passed away on August 16 at the age of 66. He was a pivotal figure in the Hampton Roads storytelling community and gained recognition far beyond the region for his engaging performances that often highlighted the African American experience.

Pritchett began his journey in the world of storytelling at an early age, joining The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Fife and Drum Corps as a member at just 13 years old. Over the years, he dedicated more than 35 years of his life to storytelling, securing a full-time position with the Fife and Drum Corps before transitioning to the African American programming department in 1984. As The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s first African American program specialist, he worked tirelessly to preserve history and culture through his art.

Throughout his distinguished career, Pritchett partnered with notable organizations including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, PBS, and the Smithsonian Museums. He was also a past president of the National Association of Black Storytellers, and his commitment to his craft earned him several accolades, including the Zora Neale Hurston Award.

Pritchett’s storytelling transcended age barriers, reaching children and adults across the United States through performances in schools and museums. He was known for encouraging audiences to engage with and better understand the complexities of African American history. Pritchett authored two children’s books, “The First Music” and “Yellow-Speckled Black Bird”, further contributing to the cultural narrative he was passionate about.

Family life was an integral part of Pritchett’s identity. His children, Shannan Morgan and Dylan Pritchett Jr., described him as a dedicated father who instilled strong family values and emphasized the importance of storytelling. He often shared experiences from his travels, bringing home souvenirs and tales from various cultures that enriched his family life and taught broader lessons about diversity and understanding.

Pritchett had plans to attend the National Association of Black Storytellers Conference this November, where he was expected to further share his craft with the community. His contributions to the visibility of African American experiences in historical narratives did not go unnoticed, garnering appreciation from colleagues and community members alike. Pritchett was often described as a positive role model and a “force of nature” in storytelling, leaving a significant impact on all who had the opportunity to witness his performances.

The loss of Dylan Pritchett is deeply felt within the James City County community, as he was a well-known figure who played a vital role in local celebrations and events. A celebration of life for Pritchett will be held on September 26 at 3 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Williamsburg. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire others in the art of storytelling, rooted in his strong belief in putting God first and cherishing family values, which he lovingly instilled in his children.
