Exciting News for Newport News: Costco Plans Big Move and Expansion!

Newport News is buzzing with news that Costco Wholesale is preparing to relocate its current store to a shiny new spot on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Bland Boulevard. The exciting part? This new location will be less than two miles down the road from where they are now at Jefferson Plaza!

What’s in Store at the New Location?

So, what can we expect at this fresh new spot? For starters, Costco is aiming to snag a property from Ferguson Enterprises, which means some serious upgrades are on the way for shoppers. The brand new facility is set to boast a whopping 829 parking spaces—more than double the current 397 spots! Finally, those pesky parking issues might become a thing of the past!

But that’s not all! The new store will also be equipped with 24 gas pumps, which again doubles the number they currently have. This is definitely a win for those who want to fill up their tanks after stocking up on groceries. Plus, the new store will be about 152,000 square feet in size, roughly 13% larger than the existing store. This means more room for all your favorite Costco goodies!

Why the Move?

Well, it turns out Costco has been eyeing a new location for several years now, mainly due to space constraints at the current store. Ferguson Enterprises is in the process of selling its current office and showroom spaces because they’ve decided to consolidate their operations into a new building at Newport News’ City Center. To make way for the Costco relocation, around 230,000 square feet of Ferguson’s facilities will need to be demolished. Now that’s a big transformation!

Traffic Concerns on the Horizon

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has raised concerns about possible traffic congestion on the I-64 off-ramp leading to Jefferson Avenue, especially with the anticipated increase in vehicle traffic. They estimate that around 150 cars could hit the roads during the afternoon peak hour and about 200 cars on Saturday afternoons. That’s a lot of extra cars buzzing around!

The good news is that the City of Newport News plans to set aside $3.25 million for off-site traffic improvements to help deal with the anticipated congestion. Talk about forward-thinking!

The Road to Permits and Funding

In terms of the official process, Costco’s request for a permit to operate gas pumps at the new location is on the agenda for review by the Planning Commission on May 7. Following that, there will be a City Council vote in June. Fingers crossed, right? Everyone involved is aiming to wrap up the sale of the new property by the end of July. If all goes as planned, this could very well be an amazing upgrade for customers and employees alike!

Job Opportunities On The Rise

Speaking of employees, the current Newport News Costco store has about 260 workers and is expected to hire an additional 30 staff members in the first year at the new site. So not only are locals getting a bigger and better store, but they’ll also have new job opportunities to look forward to!

Community Response and Future Outlook

Though the chatter about Costco’s move wasn’t officially on the Planning Commission’s public agenda, many community members are genuinely excited about the prospect of a larger facility and improved parking. Let’s be real—parking can get pretty chaotic at the current location!

As the expansion story unfolds, the taxpayers of Newport News will play a part in funding some of the necessary off-site improvements. Meanwhile, Ferguson Enterprises will keep its separate warehouse and “heritage center,” but will close down the properties involved in the Costco deal if it goes through.

The Economic Development Authority (EDA) of Newport News has given the green light to proceed with the Costco agreement, offering up to $3.5 million in incentives for off-site improvements. If all goes smoothly, we can look forward to seeing the new Costco open its doors by late 2026 or early 2027. What a thrilling time to be a Costco lover in Newport News!
