A funeral service is planned at St. Bede Catholic Church, where she will be remembered for her unwavering love and faith.
Williamsburg, Virginia – Mercedes Castejon Reyes, a cherished member of the Williamsburg community, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on June 24, 2025. She was surrounded by her loving family during her final moments, marking the end of a life filled with devotion, kindness, and joy.
Born on September 14, 1937, in Romblon, Philippines, Mercedes was the daughter of Sergio Castejon and Amalia Sanz Castejon. A dedicated Catholic, she was an active parishioner at St. Bede Catholic Church where she embodied deep faith through her contributions to the church community. Throughout her life, she was known for her cheerful spirit, often seen with her trademark smile. Her devotion to her faith was reflected in her participation as an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and her joy in attending Mass and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Professionally, Mercedes worked as an inspector at Canon Virginia. Her colleagues remembered her for her unwavering dedication, precision, and strong work ethic. Her commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside her.
A nurturing matriarch, Mercedes Castejon Reyes showed deep love and care for her family, which included her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She dedicated herself to her family life, raising her children and embracing friends’ children as if they were her own. Mercedes was predeceased by her husband, Elpidio P. Reyes, and her two sons, Jerry and Edwin Reyes, as well as her grandson, Edmund Reyes. She is survived by her children: Elmer Evidente, Raymond Reyes, Ronald Reyes, Jinky Reyes, Dorothy Butler, and Cesar Reyes. Additionally, her legacy continues through numerous grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of love.
Mercedes was remembered not only for her nurturing qualities but also for her vibrant personality. In her youth, she aspired to be an actress, with a few appearances in films in the Philippines. She had a passion for ballroom dancing, enjoyed the music of Andrea Bocelli, and cherished the classic hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Her warmth extended beyond her family; she was known for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions thoughtfully with those she held dear.
Born and raised in the Philippines, Mercedes moved to the United States where she built a new life filled with love and community, embodying quiet strength and loyalty throughout her years. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Melchor Castejon, but leaves behind numerous siblings including Agustin, Sergio, and Julian Castejon, along with many dear relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.
A funeral service is scheduled to take place at St. Bede Catholic Church on July 18, 2025. The service will begin with the Rosary at 1:00 p.m. followed by Mass at 1:30 p.m. Following the service, Mercedes will be laid to rest at Loyola Memorial in Marikina, Metro Manila, Philippines.
The legacy of Mercedes Castejon Reyes will be cherished not only by her family but by the entire Williamsburg community, who will remember her for her kindness, joy, and unwavering faith. Her life undoubtedly inspired those around her, leaving behind a rich tapestry of love and faith that will endure in the memories of all she touched.
