Williamsburg, Virginia – Starting June 19 and running through July 3, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation will host a Civic Season at the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. This two-week initiative aims to engage younger generations in American democracy, promoting civic engagement through a variety of interactive activities.
Civic Season is part of a nationwide effort involving museums and historic sites across the country, focusing on inviting members of Generation Z and millennials to participate in meaningful discussions and activities surrounding civic issues. The foundation aims to foster deeper connections with history and encourage participants to contemplate their role in the democratic process.
Among the diverse activities planned are a conversation café, where participants can discuss current events and share their viewpoints, and an escape room challenge themed “Around the World in 80 Plates,” where teams will work together to solve puzzles in order to save a community food festival. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to vote on relevant grievances from the Declaration of Independence, making it a thought-provoking experience.
Both museums will provide spaces for participants to express their hopes for America’s future on exhibit walls, generating a collective vision for civic engagement. Activities during Civic Season will be available daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are free with the purchase of museum admission.
Admission prices to the museums are set at $20 for adults, $10 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for children aged 5 and under. For those interested in visiting both museums, a combination ticket is available for $34 for adults and $17 for children aged 6 to 12. Tickets can be purchased both online and in-person at the museums.
Local residents from James City County, York County, and the City of Williamsburg can enjoy free admission to the museums, as can students from the College of William & Mary, provided they show proof of residency. Furthermore, through a partnership with Museums for All, free admission is extended to recipients of SNAP benefits, allowing up to four visitors per EBT card to enter at no cost.
Jamestown Settlement is conveniently located on Route 31 southwest of Williamsburg, while the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is situated at 200 Water Street in Yorktown. Both locations offer free parking for visitors, making it easily accessible for families and individuals interested in engaging with the civic programming.
The programming during Civic Season is designed not only to entertain but also to inspire community involvement and encourage exploration of key civic dilemmas, such as those surrounding the Constitution and the First Amendment. This initiative aims to illuminate the significance of participating in democratic processes while providing a platform for dialogue and collaboration among participants.
