Catherine, affectionately known as Cathy, was born on April 22, 1934, in Apex, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Carl and Dorothy Yates from Pittsboro. Cathy graduated from Meredith College, an institution she cherished throughout her life. Her journey led her to Williamsburg in 1959, where she began her career working as an intern in the audio-visual department.

In a twist of fate, Cathy was introduced to Jim Short, a historian at Colonial Williamsburg, through a blind date. Their relationship blossomed despite an age difference of nearly twelve years. Jim proposed to Cathy on April Fools’ Day, a memory they both treasured. The couple formed a deep connection, often finishing each other’s thoughts and exchanging love notes. They welcomed two sons into their family and made their home in the Nicolson House on York Street. Unfortunately, Jim Short passed away in 1980, prompting Cathy to transition from a full-time homemaker to a working professional.

Embracing this new chapter in her life, Cathy became a realtor with Abbitt Realty, where she dedicated many years to helping clients navigate the real estate market. Her commitment to her clients was unmatched; she often addressed emergencies at all hours, earning her respect within the local Board of Realtors. Cathy was honored with an Ethics Award, showcasing her professionalism and dedication to her work.

Catherine was also recognized for her athletic achievements as a two-time athlete of the year at Meredith College. She later took up golf, embracing the sport with a lighthearted spirit. Beyond sports, she enjoyed debating political issues but maintained a strong belief in the importance of preserving friendships, regardless of differing opinions. Cathy’s love for gardening was evident—she nurtured both plants and language with equal devotion, believing in the vitality of both.

Even in her final days, Cathy was committed to making those around her smile or giggle, showcasing her playful spirit. Her culinary preferences were distinctive; she strongly believed cornbread should not contain sugar. Additionally, Cathy was an active member of Williamsburg Baptist Church, where she encouraged fellow congregants to partake in landscaping projects, enhancing the church’s surroundings through community effort.

Cathy is survived by many loved ones, including friends Anne Allen and Bell Jo Rogers. Her son David, along with other family members, resides in Georgia and North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her first son Jonathan, and other family members who have passed.

A memorial service to honor Cathy’s remarkable life will be held on May 23rd at 11 am at Williamsburg Baptist Church. As the community gathers to pay their respects, it is clear that Catherine Yates Short’s legacy will continue to inspire many for years to come.
