WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Joel Halbert Berry, Jr., a distinguished U.S. Navy Captain and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on September 28, 2025. He is remembered not only for his extensive military service but also for his commitment to his family and community.
Born on October 8, 1927, in Norfolk, Virginia, Berry graduated from Maury High School in 1945. Shortly after, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served for one year during the post-war occupation in Guam. He later pursued his education at Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1951.
Upon graduation, Berry was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and dedicated the next 29 years to his naval career. His service included commanding various ships like the USS Forster (DER 334) and USS Blandy (DD 943), as well as overseeing the Navy Recruiting District Miami and Destroyer Squadron 15. His leadership during the Vietnam War was notable, earning him several battle efficiency and performance awards, including the prestigious Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for battle readiness while commanding the USS Blandy.
Berry’s military legacy culminated in his retirement in 1980 at the rank of Captain. Following his retirement, he ventured into the private sector and successfully owned and managed a real estate appraisal company for 12 years. He resided in the King’s Grant neighborhood of Virginia Beach, where he made numerous lifelong friends in the community.
His personal life included a 54-year marriage to Patricia Fisher, who predeceased him, along with his brother William and both parents, Joel Halbert Berry and Julia Lee Berry. He is survived by three sons: Col Joel Halbert Berry III (USMC, ret), Michael Fisher Berry, and Timothy Lee Berry. He also leaves behind daughters-in-law Anne Miren Berry and Mary Edgar Berry, as well as two grandsons, Michael Fisher Berry, Jr. and David Alwin Berry.
A small memorial service is set to take place on what would be his 98th birthday, October 8, 2025, at Freemason Street Baptist Chapel in Norfolk, at 2:00 PM, in accordance with his wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging donations to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, honoring Berry’s longstanding commitment to service. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the caregivers for their support during Berry’s final years.
