Williamsburg, Virginia – Buford William “Bill” Cyphers Jr., a devoted family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at the age of 84. His death occurred at the Hospice House of Williamsburg, leaving behind a legacy marked by his dedication to family, faith, and service to the community.

Born on January 7, 1941, in Richlands, Virginia, Bill grew up to become an influential figure in Northern Virginia. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1963 and subsequently established Cyphers Plumbing and Heating, a business known for its quality service and commitment to the community. Bill significantly contributed to local development by building houses, which provided many families with homes in the area.

An avid golfer, Bill enjoyed playing at notable country clubs, including Deer Park and Hilton Head. He often practiced his swing in his backyard, sharing his passion for golf with family and friends. His love for the sport was matched only by the companionship he shared with his beloved dog, Henry, whom he enjoyed walking regularly. Bill’s community involvement extended beyond business; he was recognized for his generous spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Faith was central to Bill’s life, as he was a devout member of Orcutt Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia. He served as a Deacon and actively participated in several church activities, reflecting his deep commitment to his faith. Previously, he was also an active member of Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown, Virginia, where he established lasting friendships and contributed to various initiatives.

Bill’s family life was marked by love and dedication. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Stephenson Peters, whom he was married to for 10 years, along with his son Pastor William Todd Cyphers and his daughter-in-law Glenna, both residing in Centerville, Ohio. He is also survived by his daughters Leann Dextradeur and Sarah Ann Cyphers, as well as step-daughter Catherine Holloway and her husband Jerry from Suffolk, Virginia. Bill’s family legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jordan Carroll, Jaclyn Baker, Dillion Dextradeur, Marcus Holloway, and honorary granddaughter Tiffany Burse, alongside ten great-grandchildren, an aunt, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Buford Cyphers Sr. and Ola May Cyphers, along with his daughter, Cynthia Cay Cyphers, his son, Paul David Cyphers, his brother, Robert Cyphers, and his previous wife, Linda S. Cyphers.

A visitation in honor of Bill is scheduled for July 12 at 1:00 PM at Orcutt Baptist Church in Newport News. Following the visitation, a service will be held at 2:00 PM, culminating in a reception to celebrate his life and the positive impact he had on many. The community is encouraged to honor Bill’s memory through donations to the Hospice House of Williamsburg or Orcutt Baptist Church, reflecting the values he lived by throughout his life.

Bill Cyphers will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, community, and faith, as well as his kindness, generosity, and love for helping others. His legacy leaves a profound mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
