Known for her kindness and commitment to education, she leaves behind her children, seven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren, along with countless memories as an inspiring figure in their lives.

Born on October 25, 1935, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, Shirley was the oldest of two children to Carey and Catherine Ross. Growing up in a nurturing environment, she was recognized for her generous spirit and lack of malice. Academically gifted, she served in various leadership roles during her high school years at George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia, including cheerleader, band member, student body president, and valedictorian. Shirley graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary in 1957.

In the 1950s and 60s, Shirley devoted herself to raising three children with her former husband, Charles Wood. As her children matured, she transitioned into a career in education, taking the role of Education Assistant at a local elementary school while pursuing a master’s degree in Elementary Education. Following her graduation, she began teaching at Bren Mar Elementary School in Alexandria and later continued her education by completing a master’s specialist program, allowing her to teach high school level mathematics.

During her lengthy tenure at Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia, Shirley focused on helping struggling students overcome their difficulties with math. Her passion for teaching was evident, and many students benefitted from her dedication and patience. Following the passing of her husband, Captain Richard W. Blaes, in 1995, Shirley retired to care for him and later for her mother until she passed away in 1996.

In 1997, Shirley relocated to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to be closer to one of her sons. In retirement, she intensified her involvement in community service by taking on the role of Treasurer for the Spartanburg Friends of the Library.
