New facility for The Arc of Greater Williamsburg

News Summary

Supporters of The Arc of Greater Williamsburg have raised $1 million to purchase a new building dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The $1.8 million property will enhance local services and is part of a capital campaign aiming for $2.5 million. The new facility will include amenities like a sensory room and an art studio, with operations expected to transition by late November. Established in 1976, The Arc focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and will celebrate its 50th anniversary soon.

Williamsburg, VA – Supporters of The Arc of Greater Williamsburg have successfully raised $1 million to facilitate the purchase of a new building, allowing the nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to progress towards a new operational base. Pam McGregor, the executive director of The Arc, confirmed that the funds will enable the organization to close on the $1.8 million property by mid-October.

The new building, a 10,000-square-foot facility located at 438 McLaws Circle in the Busch Corporate Center, will enhance the services provided to the local community. An addendum to the purchase agreement was signed on August 5, paving the way for the acquisition. A formal announcement regarding a capital fund campaign is scheduled for August 20, with the aim of raising a total of $2.5 million to cover necessary maintenance, upkeep, and additional features including a sensory room and an art studio.

As part of this capital campaign, The Arc will provide opportunities for donors to receive named sponsorships for various spaces within the new facility, such as the art studio, garden, lobby, and wellness center. If the timeline remains on schedule, the organization plans to begin relocating operations to this new building by late November this year. The administrative offices will be the first to move, followed by the day program that serves around 20 individuals currently operating at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center in James City County’s Grove community, four days a week.

Once fully operational, the new facility is expected to host the day program starting in January 2026. This transition will significantly enhance the quality of services offered to the individuals served by The Arc, as it will provide a dedicated space for various programs aimed at supporting and empowering those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Greater Williamsburg is part of a national network of approximately 600 similar organizations dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Established in 1976, the organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, reflecting decades of commitment to advocacy, education, and community activities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its constituents.

The Arc’s mission emphasizes improving the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through various initiatives, including continuing education, life skills development, and vocational training for those transitioning out of special education. The upcoming purchase and expansion of its facilities represent a pivotal move in the organization’s ongoing efforts to adapt and grow in response to the needs of the community.

For those wishing to contribute to the cause, donations and contributions towards the capital campaign can be made online. The upcoming developments are anticipated to significantly bolster the organization’s capacity to serve and support individuals with disabilities in the Williamsburg area.
