WILLIAMSBURG, VA – Ronald Curtis, a long-time resident and esteemed home builder in Williamsburg, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on September 28, 2025. He was surrounded by his wife, Joanne, and their two children at the time of his death.
Born on December 28, 1944, in Pleasant Garden, NC, Curtis was the son of Roy and Ethel Curtis, both of whom are deceased. He is remembered fondly by his surviving sister, Sandra Davenport, and he was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Curtis.
Growing up in a close-knit rural community, Ronald learned the values of hard work and gratitude while working on his family’s tobacco and vegetable farm. He frequently recalled his fond memories of training his horse and driving the school bus at the age of 16. He graduated from Southeast High School in Greensboro, NC, where he not only excelled academically but was also recognized as “Most Courteous” and played on the football team.
After high school, Ronald earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1967. He began his professional career at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, where he worked for nine years. During his tenure, he oversaw critical projects, including the refueling of a nuclear reactor on the USS Enterprise and the electrical design of the Seawolf-class submarines.
Transitioning from shipbuilding to custom home construction, Ronald became one of Williamsburg’s most respected builders. Over a span of 50 years, he constructed more than 800 homes in various prominent neighborhoods such as Kingsmill, Governor’s Land, and Ford’s Colony. Renowned for their timeless style and exceptional quality, the neighborhoods he developed—including Counselors Close, Settler’s Mill, Piney Creek, and Longhill Woods—are a testament to his dedication to craftsmanship.
Throughout his career, Ronald was not only a builder but also a community member who built lasting relationships with his clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. He was an active participant in the Peninsula Home Builders’ Association and served on the James City County Board of Building Adjustments and Appeals.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ronald was cherished for his calm demeanor, his warm smile, and his rapport with children. He engaged in numerous outdoor activities, including skiing, hunting, fishing, golfing, and enjoyment of roller coasters. A devoted supporter of NC State football, he could often be found attending games.
Ronald Curtis is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne, and their two children: Brian Curtis (married to Kristine) and Wendy Baker (married to Brad). He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Mason Baker, Jacob Baker, and Sophie Curtis.
A funeral service in Ronald’s honor will take place at 3:00 PM on October 10, 2025, at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception in Stevenson Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the NC State University-College of Engineering Leadership Fund or FISH Williamsburg.
Ronald Curtis leaves behind a legacy defined by dedication to family, community, and the craft of home building, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
