Newport News, VA – LaVerne P. Brown, a cherished member of the community and devoted retiree, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, at the age of 92. Her contributions to the community and her legacy as a caring family member and friend will be remembered by many.

Born on July 22, 1933, to Fannie B. and Robert C. Williams, LaVerne grew up in a loving household that laid the foundation for her warm character. After completing her education, she graduated from Huntington High School in 1952. Following her academic achievements, LaVerne dedicated her professional life to Hampton University, where she retired after years of committed service.

A lifelong member of First Baptist East End in Newport News, VA, LaVerne was deeply involved in her church community and participated actively in various church activities. Her passion extended beyond her religious commitments; she was known for her love of cooking and spent countless hours preparing meals for family and friends, creating cherished memories through food and fellowship.

LaVerne had a zest for life and embraced new adventures by traveling and exploring different cultures. Regardless of where she went, she brought joy and warmth to those around her. Additionally, she had a talent for crafting, showcasing her creativity and dedication to making unique items that she often shared with loved ones.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence E. Brown. She is survived by her son, Morris Martin, Jr. (Fabiola), of Newport News, VA, and her daughter, Darnae M. Martin, who resides in Hampton, VA. Her loving family further includes her granddaughter, Toya J. Lawton, living in Virginia Beach, VA, and two great-granddaughters, Tamia A. Lawton and Madison E. Lawton, also from Virginia Beach, VA. Additionally, her cousin, Sharon Johnson, resides in Sandston, VA, and she is also survived by a host of other family members and friends.

The family has entrusted the funeral services to Altmeyer Funeral Home in Newport News, VA. A private service will take place at the Altmeyer Funeral Home Chapel, allowing family and close friends the opportunity to honor LaVerne’s remarkable life in an intimate setting. In their time of loss, the family expressed deep gratitude for the support and prayers offered during Mrs. Brown’s final years and asked for continued thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time.

LaVerne P. Brown leaves behind a legacy filled with love, positivity, and an indelible impact on her community. Her spirit will live on through her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched during her remarkable journey.
