News Summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a long-term closure of Six Mount Zion Road at I-64, beginning September 22 and lasting through spring 2026. This closure will facilitate bridge widening and other improvements to enhance traffic flow along this critical transport corridor. Motorists will be directed to signed detours during the closure, while VDOT recommends utilizing their traffic tools for real-time updates on conditions. The project is part of the extensive I-64 Gap Widening initiative aimed at improving connectivity between Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Williamsburg, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the long-term closure of Six Mount Zion Road at I-64 is set to begin as early as September 22. This closure will affect the area between Mount Laurel Road and the intersection of La Grange Parkway and is expected to remain in place through spring 2026.

Motorists will be directed by signed detours towards Barhamsville Road (Route 30) via Fieldstone Parkway or La Grange Parkway during the closure. Importantly, no I-64 ramps will be impacted by this closure. The primary purpose of the closure is to facilitate bridge widening that will allow for three lanes in each direction on I-64. Additional work will include bridge rehabilitation, paving, and utility relocations.

This closure is part of the “Segment C” section of the I-64 Gap Widening project. Segment C involves considerable improvements along a nine-mile stretch of the roadway, which includes the repair and widening of two bridges on I-64 over Six Mount Zion Road. Along with the major alterations to the highway, the project plans to pave the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot in York County and install overhead signage, advanced traffic management technology systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls, and enhancements to storm drainage systems.

Completion of Segment C is anticipated as early as late 2027, which will significantly improve traffic flow through this busy transport corridor, connecting Richmond and Hampton Roads more effectively. VDOT has advised citizens to access up-to-date information on the I-64 Gap Segment C Project through their official channels.

Additionally, VDOT has recommended utilizing their free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app to track current road and travel conditions, particularly during this period of significant infrastructural modifications.

In a related update, an overnight lane closure on I-64 West in James City County is scheduled to commence Sunday night and will last for two weeks from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. This lane closure is part of a long-term traffic shift and construction project designed to further enhance connectivity between Richmond and Hampton Roads.

The larger project includes widening approximately 29 miles of travel lanes and the addition of a third lane. As part of the traffic shift strategy, traffic will be moved five feet to the right, accompanied by temporary traffic barriers. This shift is expected to remain until summer 2026 and follows a similar traffic change that was implemented in the eastbound direction of I-64 back in March.

VDOT urges residents and commuters to stay informed by regularly checking their website for project-related information and updates. As construction progresses, the department aims to minimize inconvenience while maximizing improvements to the roadway system.
