Williamsburg – Construction of the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center is progressing well, with the facility approximately 65% complete and on track for an expected opening in August 2026. This venue is a collaborative effort involving the City of Williamsburg, James City County, and York County.

The construction of the center began last year on the campus of the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. Designed by Clarknexsen and GuernseyTingle, with MEB serving as the general contractor, the multi-purpose sports facility will span 200,000 square feet and is notable for its unique brick façade, making it one of the few sports centers in the nation with this architectural style.

As of now, while the building’s exterior work is nearing completion, the focus has shifted to the interior development. Once finished, the center will have the capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 visitors and feature a diverse range of sporting amenities: 12 basketball courts, 24 volleyball courts, and 36 pickleball courts. There is also potential for additional indoor sports like soccer, field hockey, and flag football, facilitated by a large turf area allowing for quick reconfiguration of space.

Moreover, the facility aims to provide a well-rounded experience for visitors, incorporating amenities such as rock climbing and Ninja Warrior obstacle courses, a gym, and a mezzanine area. Concessions will include options for beer and wine, with designated gathering spaces for teams. The center will also feature a balcony lounge, a spacious lobby with seating, and conference rooms equipped with retractable walls for versatility.

The construction project has progressed without any significant setbacks and is currently ahead of schedule by 11 days. A dedicated effort to enhance visitor experiences includes the anticipated construction of a new road with a traffic signal off Capitol Landing Road to streamline access and improve traffic flow for the impending influx of visitors.

In terms of visitor projections, the center is expected to significantly boost local tourism, with over 86,000 hotel stays anticipated in the coming years. Tournaments and events have already been scheduled through 2028, with more than 16,000 hotel rooms secured to accommodate participants from events like Phenom Hoops and Southern Volleyball.

In addition to its primary function as a sports venue, the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center is also being designed to host a variety of community events and activities, broadening its appeal and utility within the region. Discussions for a live performance venue in close proximity to the sports center are also underway, with hopes of establishing it by next year.

Lastly, the name of the facility was officially sanctioned as the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center by the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority. This facility represents a significant investment in local infrastructure, aiming to enrich recreational opportunities and enhance the community’s sporting landscape.
