News Summary

Busch Gardens Williamsburg has reinstated its chaperone policy for the Howl-O-Scream event, requiring guests 15 and younger to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. The policy, starting September 5, ensures safety and is in response to past disturbances. Guests aged 16 and older will also need to present a valid photo ID for entry. Park officials aim to create a safer environment for all attendees. This continuation of previous safety measures reflects the park’s commitment to visitor safety while providing a thrilling Halloween experience.

Williamsburg, Virginia – Busch Gardens Williamsburg has announced the reinstatement of a chaperone policy for its annual Howl-O-Scream event, aimed at enhancing safety measures for all attendees. The new policy will take effect starting Friday, September 5, 2025, and will remain in effect until Sunday, November 2, 2025.

The chaperone policy requires that all guests aged 15 and younger visit the park with an adult chaperone who is at least 21 years old after 4 p.m. Each chaperone is allowed to supervise up to six minors and must enter the park with the group, stay inside the park throughout their visit, and be reachable by phone. Should any guest aged 15 and younger be found inside the park without an available chaperone, they may be removed without a refund.

In addition to the chaperone requirement, guests aged 16 and older must present a valid government-issued photo ID that includes their birth date to gain entry into the park. Acceptable forms of identification include a driver’s license, state-issued ID card, passport, and military ID. Guests who cannot present valid ID may be denied entry to the event.

This policy is a continuation of measures first implemented in 2024, primarily in response to safety concerns raised during past Howl-O-Scream events. The decision to reinstate the chaperone policy follows multiple disturbances, including a large fight during the opening weekend of Howl-O-Scream—a situation where several hundred people were involved but fortunately resulted in no injuries. Additionally, police reports indicate that a boy was detained under suspicion of being armed, but he was released when no weapon was found.

Furthermore, on September 14, 2025, local law enforcement responded to another fight, which led to a man reporting he was stabbed. He was subsequently taken to a hospital but is expected to recover. Such incidents have prompted park officials to reinforce security and ensure a safe environment for guests of all ages.

Busch Gardens has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a welcoming atmosphere while prioritizing the safety of all visitors and team members. They have also noted that this policy is subject to changes based on park regulations and ongoing evaluations of safety needs.

Howl-O-Scream is one of Williamsburg’s anticipated annual events, drawing large crowds for its thrilling attractions and spooky experiences. With the enhanced measures in place, park officials are hopeful that this year’s event will proceed more smoothly, allowing families to enjoy the festivities in a safer environment.
