Recently, the WSO concluded its 40th anniversary season with a special concert titled “From the New World” held on May 14. This performance featured the acclaimed Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and the Leah Glenn Dance Theatre. The concert showcased a rich blend of musical and cultural elements, including Nakai’s original compositions like “Inner Voices,” “Kokopelli Wind,” and a poignant rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

As part of the event, the Leah Glenn Dance Theatre presented a world premiere of a new composition by Grammy-nominated composer Dawn Avery, titled “Secrets: Remembering the Brafferton Indian School.” The concert’s finale included Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, famously known as “From the New World.” Music director Michael Butterman highlighted Dvorak’s efforts to capture the essence of Native American music influences in his compositions.

The focus of Avery’s work, the Brafferton Indian School, was established in 1723 and played a significant role in the education of Native American students, differentiating it from the later industrial boarding school systems. Students enrolled at Brafferton were from tribes that had treaty relationships with Great Britain. The historical context of the Brafferton was emphasized by anthropology professor Danielle Moretti-Langholtz from William & Mary, who noted its significant role in understanding Native American history.

Avery’s inspiration to compose “Secrets” stemmed from her discovery of the Brafferton’s history, and the performance aimed to honor the stories and struggles of the Native American students who attended the school. During the concert, five dancers represented different Native nations and tribes, with each movement paying tribute to the rich cultural heritage and respect for Native cultures.

This combination of music, dance, and historical reflection provided a powerful conclusion to the WSO’s anniversary season, reaffirming the orchestra’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and heritage through the arts.
