Williamsburg – The Arc of Greater Williamsburg has successfully raised $1 million to purchase a new building, allowing the organization to enhance its services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the local area. Executive Director Pam McGregor announced that the funding will facilitate the closing on the property by mid-October 2023.
On August 5, an addendum to the purchase agreement was signed for a property valued at $1.8 million, located at 438 McLaws Circle in the Busch Corporate Center. With this investment, The Arc aims to significantly expand its facilities and create a more conducive environment for its programs.
The new facility spans 10,000 square feet and is set to become a hub for various activities that support the organization’s mission. A meeting is scheduled for August 20 at the new site where The Arc will announce the launch of a capital fund campaign. This campaign aims to raise an additional total of $2.5 million for important enhancements and long-term maintenance of the building.
One of the key features of the proposed renovations includes a sensory room and an art studio, both designed to cater to the unique needs of the individuals served by The Arc. The capital campaign will also present naming opportunities for various spaces within the new building, including the art studio and training centers, allowing local contributors to leave a lasting legacy.
If the project remains on track, The Arc expects to begin moving into the new location in late November 2023, starting with administrative offices, while the day program is projected to open in January 2026. Currently, this program serves approximately 20 clients four days a week at another community center.
The Arc of Greater Williamsburg provides support to around 250 families across Williamsburg, James City County, and York County. Established in 1976, the organization is a local chapter of approximately 600 similar nonprofits across the United States and is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
The nonprofit focuses on improving the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community activities, advocacy, and education. Its services include continuing education, life skills development, and vocational training specifically targeted at young adults transitioning out of public school special education programs.
In recent evaluations of their space requirements, The Arc identified a pressing need for a larger facility to accommodate their growing number of clients and to enhance service delivery. The funds raised from the capital campaign will not only assist in the acquisition of the new property but also cover the ongoing maintenance expenses necessary to keep it functional and welcoming.
Individuals and businesses interested in supporting The Arc’s mission can access the capital campaign site for donation opportunities. The organization is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment that empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and resources needed to thrive in their communities.
