Born in 1945 in Augsburg, Germany, Vasiliauskas escaped the grips of genocide, later immigrating to the United States in search of the American Dream. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1963 before attending the prestigious United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1968. During his time at the academy, he showcased his athletic talent as an All-American soccer player, earning a place in the school’s Hall of Fame for his impressive achievements. Prior to his enrollment at the Naval Academy, he spent an academic year studying at Pratt Institute in 1963-1964, further enhancing his education.

Vasiliauskas began his service in the U.S. Navy, pursuing a career that included a significant role in the engineering department aboard the USS Lofberg (DD-759) during the Vietnam War. He later served on the 7th Fleet, Logistics Support staff in Yokosuka, Japan, until his honorable discharge as a Lieutenant due to a serious injury on July 1st, 1971.

Following his military career, Vasiliauskas embarked on a successful professional journey. He earned an Executive MBA from Loyola University in Baltimore in 1980 and rose through the ranks in various capacities, including Project Engineer, Plant Manager, Chief Operating Officer, and President in different organizations.

Dedication to Family and Legacy

Throughout his life, Vasiliauskas remained committed to his family. He and his wife, Melanie, began dating in 1974 and celebrated their marriage in 1979, marking 51 years together. He was a proud father to three daughters—Emily Kate, Lydia Alice, and Audra Elaine—who all graduated from college with honors. Vasiliauskas devoted himself to ensuring that his daughters graduated without debt, and he played a pivotal role in their successful careers, deeply influencing their paths.

Vasiliauskas was known for his kindness and intellect, consistently uplifting those around him without making them feel small. In times of crisis, he was often the first point of contact for help, which spoke volumes about his character and willingness to serve others.

Personal Interests and Community Connections

Besides his professional and familial achievements, Vasiliauskas had a passion for standard poodles, with his first poodle, Bach, even serving as the ringbearer at his wedding. He is survived by his beloved wife Melanie, their daughters, three grandchildren—Ingrid, Alfred, and Isaac—and two grandpoodles, Oliver and Lilly. Additionally, he is remembered by a sister, Laima, in Philadelphia, and a network of United States Naval Academy classmates and friends including Doug Bomarito, Edward Kratovil, and Robert Webb.

Vasiliauskas’s parents, Kazys and Vanda Vasiliauskas, along with his best friend Robert Webb, preceded him in death. In honor of his memory, a selection from T.S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets” will be recited at his cremation service, reflecting his thoughtful and reflective nature.

Vasiliauskas expressed gratitude for the care he received from healthcare providers at the Richmond, Hampton, and Salem VA Medical Centers, who helped him achieve his wish for precious time with family during his final days.
