Community events aim to maximize involvement and support for local students, showcasing a strong commitment to education within the community.

Williamsburg is gearing up for the upcoming school year as several local organizations, including the Williamsburg Regional Library, have launched initiatives to collect school supplies for families in need. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that every student has the materials they require to start the academic year off on the right foot.

The Williamsburg Regional Library is spearheading a school supply drive that runs from July 24 to August 16. Residents can drop off donations at two locations: the Williamsburg Library at 515 Scotland Street and the James City County Library at 7770 Croaker Road. Library operating hours for donations are Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 8 pm, Friday from 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Collected supplies will be distributed to local students through the Williamsburg Regional Library Bookmobile, providing a convenient delivery option for families.

In addition to the library’s efforts, the Williamsburg Police Department will host a Back-to-School Drive on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Staples, located at 1320 Richmond Road. Donation boxes are also available at Staples and Walgreens at 1309 Richmond Road until August 15. This collaborative approach is designed to maximize community involvement in supporting local students.

Another significant event is the 11th annual Back-to-School Community Event organized by Real People Educating Others (RPEO) and the 757 Giveback Committee, scheduled for August 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lafayette High School. This event promises a fun-filled day with various activities, including face painting, a gaming truck, a bounce house, free haircuts, free food, school supplies, and access to community resource vendors. Notably, a Spanish interpreter will be present to assist non-English speaking attendees, ensuring inclusivity for all families.

The RPEO nonprofit organization, co-founded in 2008 by Purcell “P.J.” Piggott, Reneldo Randall, and Cory Judge, has been a driving force in supporting local education initiatives. As part of their mission, RPEO prioritizes providing necessary resources to students and families throughout the Williamsburg area.

In yet another initiative, the Virginia Beer Company is also making contributions to the cause by conducting a Back-to-School Backpack and Supply Drive, which will continue until August 20 at their location, 401 Second St.. They are accepting a variety of school supplies and as a special incentive, donors have the chance to win a $100 gift card for their contributions, further encouraging community involvement.

The Williamsburg Regional Library’s School Supply Drive is not limited to basic supplies; it is also accepting items such as backpacks and tissues. These donations play a crucial role in equipping students with the tools they need for a successful school year.

Residents who wish to support these initiatives are encouraged to gather supplies and participate in the various drives available. For more information about all these supply drives, community members can visit the websites of the relevant organizations, which include rpeova.org, virginiabeerco.com, facebook.com/WilliamsburgPD, and facebook.com/WRLibrary.

As the school year approaches, the collective efforts of these local organizations showcase the commitment of the Williamsburg community to support its students and ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
